Import bare root decidious tree?

Post by itsfullofstars »

Hi, i guess this is probably a bad idea.

Has anyone ever imported a bare root deciduous tree from the U.S or U.K before? It's winter time there now and would be a good idea, if anyone actually ships them.
Are they even allowed to be shipped?

Probably a silly question :?

Yes you can. http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/go ... ort-plants I sometimes import dried plant material for work, oh the pain! Good luck grasshopper.
Having said that imported weeds in my area are like a cancer on the local bush, so we shouldn't complain.
Cheers, Symon

Depend on where from and what variety I believe.

NOt sure why you would want to from those countries unless they are expensive bonsai. We already have many of the varieties here already as stock trees.
Bonsai have been brought over from Japan but takes up to 2 years in Quarantine which you have to pay for and no guarantees they wil be looked after properly

Live trees can be imported but quarantine is quite stringent. I believe they must be completely bare rooted then dipped in a sterilising agent( Methyl bromide???) and then grown in the quarantine facility for a full growing season to check that no disease is present before they can be released. Quarantine staff do have plenty of experience so success is high. All that care does not come cheap.

Melbourne club members imported quite a few maples from Japan during the 1980s. Most survived quarantine but I believe that very few are still alive today. Whether that is delayed response to quarantine or subsequent mistreatment by new owners is not clear.
