think im going to buy a 30 dollar kiddies pool a bit bigger than the shell, and spray the inside with truck liner. hopefully that will work as a pot

Firstly well done, you seem to have a good number of roots to support this and with the cooler than normal February temps and high humidity here in Perth at the moment you should have a very good chance of survival.

Secondly I am jealous as hell!

Not too often do we get a chance to collect stock like this and have our wicked way with it!!! I look forward to seeing what you are going to do with it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Jeff!!!
There was actually not a single root growing downwards.. basically we just dug a ring around the outside of the foliage and the roots just peeled off the ground like a bandaid, so im pretty confident that i got as much as was possible.
the only thing im really concerned about is the amount of man-handling it took to get it on the ute

ended up finding the perfect size box for 40 bucks at a local salvage yard, so didn't try the whole pool idea ha
200 litres of potting mix later, and shes ready to power on

So its been a bit over 7 weeks, and at this point it seems to have survived..
It has plenty of small fresh growth growing from allot of the branch intersections, and the older foliage tips are continuing to swell, getting ready to drop its pollen.
Colour has faded a little bit in places, but as green as ever in the rest...

Can anyone, maybe help me come up with a basic timeline of what to do from now.
Like when to start liquid fert etc, and when to start thinning out the branches.
After reading some other posts, i have noticed allot of people recommend thinning everything out and just leaving the growth closest to the trunks before collecting but so far, the only branches that have been removed are the longest growth, which the previous owner removed about 2 months before collection. So just unsure if its worth attempting now, or just letting it be for another year.

Mite move this over to a progression thread, when i get a chance to take some updated photos.

Yep being a juniper you can definitely start fertilising, it will be beneficial. Also you can slowly start to thin it out, but don't go crazy, remember you are trying to get it grow to be healthy and get its vigour back. A tree this size needs time, so don't rush it. Work on a design that you might like. Good luck and keep us posted

i was thinking similarly, but being so far out of my comfort zone i kinda needed that nod of approval before i start feeding and trimming

I will spend the next couple of afternoons thinning it out, im thinking just enough to let some sunin closer to the trunk. And to keep things simple il start it on the same feeding regime as my other junis but mite water it down just a bit.

Mate here in Perth you can still lightly fertilize through to the end of April, you will find we still get growth going on (in particular trunk girth) at this time of the year. I often use this time of the year as an opportunity to report those that I missed in Spring as the weather patterns are so similar.

I would definitely thin it a little as you suggest to let some light into the inner portions of the branches.

It looks like there's a lot of dead branches in there, I would start by just removing those, then move on to removing a little bit of the green stuff if you want.

and thanks jared, iv slowly been removing the dead stuff but its a very slow process as most of the dead looking stuff still have small sections of growth right out on the tips.
went pretty hard last night though and below is what can be seen of the trunk now.
Have also put a photo showing some of the fresh growth.
