Hi All,

Well it's looking very likely that next year I'll be moving from Sydney to Perth. Has anyone done this before with a bonsai collection? How did you do physically it? Any interstate quarantine requirements? Most of my collection are Port Jackson Figs, but I have some Celtis and a Chinese Elm. I'm tempted to sell them and rebuy in the West, but then again, that's rather drastic.

The Sandgropers have very strict quarantine. They won't allow plants with soil through without proper inspection and certification and have inspection points on all the major entry points.
You should talk to the WA department of Agriculture and Food to see if there's any way to get your trees into WA.

From what i hear you have buckleys of gettign stuff into WA.
Check with authorities there and let us know how you go

Re travelling, You are best off usin a Van or covered trailer and taking them yourself.
You can ensure then tey do not get too hot or blown about and you can water when you need to

that most likely wil be the best option, Sell off your collectiona dn then use the funds to buy New good quality trees over there

I can offer no advice about getting them over here. But unless you have some solid contacts over here, prepare to empty your wallet for decent stock.

My understanding is that Arthur Robinson imported Satsuki Azaleas into WA. I believe he was/is an accredited quarantine importer. If you can make contact with him he may be able to advise you.

It is possible (I did it a few years back), but expensive. You have to apply to WA Quarantine, giving them the correct Botanic names for each of the trees you wish to take into WA. They will give you permission to take the trees which are allowed into WA (some aren't under any circumstances, the figs are OK). You then have to remove all the SOIL and have the trees sprayed in the presence of a Quarantine Officer, who will issue you with a certificate stating the trees have been sprayed in accordance with Quarantine requirements. The trees can have their roots covered with Sphagnum, or Coir moss for the trip over. Not many Removalist companies will carry plants into WA, because of the holdup at the Inspection Station, so yep, best to take them yourself.

I suggest you do as Graeme says. Over the years bonsai enthusiasts have bought their collections, or some of the collection across themselves with permission. What time of year will you be travelling? Definitely no Myrtacae and maybe not elms. WA members have taken trees out and back for bonsai workshops Takes some effort like the best things in life

With a collection of mostly figs who cares. Sell them and move on to some better stuff . Nothing against figs. I just hate them on a more serious not they probably would not do that well there anyway .

Having started my Bonsai life in Victoria (too many years ago to think about) then having moved to Perth, then back to Victoria, then to Townsville then back to Victoria and finally back to Perth I can tell you that, I have sold my collection so many times and started all over again.

I can tell you that I regretted every single sale!

If I had my time again I would take more time and put in more effort than I have in the past to move as opposed to selling my collection.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll be moving in January. Not a great time of year to travel with trees across the desert. Got to confirm that this move is going ahead in the next week or two and then make some decisions re my trees. Thanks again

I've only ever grown them in Sydney. I realise Perth is dry but temps seem pretty good for figs. If i simply kept the water up wouldn't they fare pretty well? Maybe I'm missing something...

Figs are growing excellent over here!!
