agreed on the fantastic, i think you will find your tree in the first section near the main trunk though, i cant see much use for the long tail aprat from pushing health to the tree for now.
hope it survives for ya aswell,
you could always air layer that off later down the track and get another tree out of it to regarding the long tail.

thanks yeah im thinking the same but most of those are dead branches but i think if i lose the tail now it will have a better chance of living

mmmm could be a catch 22. lose the tail and you might lose strength getting pushed into the root ball, keep it and you migh dehydrate the tree...
what were the roots like??? many fine feeders in the rootball???

Yeah if it was a bogey or a fig would not be worried but there was a fair bit of small feeders and it came out real easy good soil watered and had it in a pot in 30 min flooded with superthrive an hormone powder and it's on great soil if it lives I would love to keep the tail and fold it in half and keep a litlle amount of folliage

Re: yamadori juniper squamata and shimpaku
Gday Dayne,
I dug 6 big Junipers with scale type foliage about a year ago down here in Vic and all I did was stick em in a pot using a bag of 2 buck potting mix from the supermarket. They too had not much in the way of roots when I dug them. I left some in part shade and some in full sun and all but one survived. I know that at least 2 of them not have a pot full of roots and couldn't be happier or healthier.
I did not move the pots at all during the year and gave them water only when the soil became reasonably dry. I didn't fertilize them at all for that entire year.
I did not take too much foliage off of my trees.
I have now just begun fertilizing them and have begun styling on 3 of them. Another one I am considering entering into the Bunjin contest!
So my suggestion would be to just put your tree somewhere and leave it there for at least a year. Water it when it gets dry. Dont take any more branches or foliage off than you already have.
Good luck...you have many styling possibilities with a tree like that...could end up a showstopper!

Re: yamadori juniper squamata and shimpaku
No worries mate... My Literati comp contender got a serious workover tonight...Ended up going with the good ole "1,2,3" branch design with a gigantic shari down the trunk running from one Jin halfway up the tree on the left hand side down to another Jin down at the bottom of the trunk on the right hand side. I used the shari to accentuate some very gentle curves in the trunk...Made a reasonably straight tree look that little bit more curvy.
All I can do now is hope I havent killed it!
Photos should be up tomorrow
