Weeds .... to Bonsai

Just a quick note to folk that are new to the hobby - remember to keep your eye out .... Potential Bonsai pop up in all sorts of locations.

Case in point ... here’s my courtyard - it is shaded by this 16 year old Chinese Elm.

Seedlings pop up like weeds in all sorts of places:

In a pot of Bamboo - Ten seedlings at least.
IMG_6166.jpg
In garden beds, here two more.
IMG_6165.jpg
It a small orchid pot - a few more
IMG_6168.jpg
And a bigger one in with a cymbidium.

Oh, and don’t forget to look up! What is that in the hanging basket?

For the sake of it, I might remove these and plant them up so that people can get a sense of the different ways we can start a potential bonsai.

Of course, let’s support our industry, nurseries etc... but don’t forget to notice the potential that may exist in your garden, at a mates joint and in so many other places.

Cheers,

M

Plants plants every where
Can i dig it?
Do i dare
From the missus
A deathly stare

A wink to your mate
He knows what's to be done
After all
It's just some fun

Just like the feathers
Of a beautiful Pheasant
He'll drop it off
As your Christmas present

Reasonably busy day ... ripped into a 20 metre hedge with a new chrissy preso. Managed to do a few chores around the house to keep the family happy and then decided to whack out those random seedlings too. Here’s a few photos and like Max - I might now crack open a drink. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Keeping them wet while I wandered around the garden pulling them out. Dropped a tad of Seasol in that water too.

An example of roots - these were trimmed back and spread out on planting. Other seedlings had finer roots.

Into a sieve.

Into a grow bed after a trim

It’s taken me a while but I am putting more and more stuff in sieves, orchids pots etc... and then into grow beds. I am a slow learner but I think this will help develop trees with greater speed.

Anyway - cool to get a range of random little seedlings underway. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Boom - yes, I should have wired too. They’re only twigs still / I’ll do it when they have settled into their next growth phase.

Max - somewhat cryptic but I did cut and spread the roots?

Completely separately - I have few clump-style Chinese Elms now - (establishes from weeds innorior seasons!)... I was reading Koreshoff last night on how to style them and am quite excited to set some good bones on them too.

As Ryceman3 says no weeds just lots of opportunities ... bring on the weeds each year and I may just improve my technique overtime.

Great work! It's always worth keeping an eye out around the house, I've found some interesting things pop up in the garden here and there.

Most recently a Jacaranda seedling has popped up in the pot of my Chinese Tamarisk though i'm not sure how well jacaranda flower as bonsai.

Hi Tim, if you go to the "Wiki" link up the top it's got info on the Jacaranda, they look fantastic in flower, there's even a photo comparison of the leaf reduction. Great work AusBonsai

Jac make real nice trees as Bonsai but seedlings will take 7 or so years to flower if in the ground.
problem with them as Bonsai is they will not flower as we have cut them back all the time to control growth and as the only flower on the new growth we keep cutteing that off !

Tim I've seen jacaranda bonsai flowering, but most of them seem to be in sub tropical climates, and as Ken mentioned, they have to be left to grow their new growth from Winter onwards...

sorry for the side step Mark...
