And a quick question if I may.... if I am taking root cutting from an old crab-apple that is clearly grafted ... what is the likely stock that the crab apple was grafted too? (i.e. What is the root that I am cutting?) ... My apologies in advance if that is silly question...

Re: species which grow from root cuttings
Probably just an apple variety - presumably you have crabs (of the tree variety).
Once the roots take, re-graft crab to it.

. I don’t have crabs of either variety to my knowledge!
So it looks like I’ll need to find a variety and then learn the art of grafting ... I’m learning a lot from this forum ... and ...
much as I am tempted ... I’ll walk away from the various dad-jokes circling inside my head ...

Re: species which grow from root cuttings
There are a number of apple root stocks that are used in Australia. In the past most have been British clones developed at the Merton or East Malling apple research stations and have the prefix M or MM and a number to identify them. You can probably search for a list of the different stocks and their charcteristics.
Australian growers also used an understock called 'Northern Spy' for a long time as a rootstock resistant to blight and wooly aphid.
Some crab apple growers have also used seedlings from Granny Smith seeds as vigorous rootstock but probably not commercially.
Your crab apple root stock could be any of about 5 and less likely another dozen different varieties.
The question is: Does it matter what it is called?

Re: species which grow from root cuttings
Certainly not to me Neil. My question has been answered in that I now know it ain't crab apple and to get the crab part I will need to graft... I was unaware of this and it makes me wonder whether to take the root cutting at all - rather than just buy a crab apple.

Re: species which grow from root cuttings
the perennial bonsai question: Start with seed or cuttings and grow it yourself? Purchase someone else's work and continue development?it makes me wonder whether to take the root cutting at all - rather than just buy a crab apple.
Time V cash outlay. All your work (mistakes) or someone else's.
Only you can answer the question and each of us will have a different opinion and answer.

Can also add blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) to the list. I've got a whole bunch of new plants sprouting from roots which escaped into the ground.

Re: species which grow from root cuttings
Acacia implexa also suckers a lot when the tree becomes stressed or dies so it is probably another candidate for root cuttings.
I wonder how many other acacias might respond?
