It should I've got to keep my husband from constantly buying watches. He has more than I own bonsai. So it should work vice versa.

I'm lucky as my collection is at work and my wife hardly ever comes here so she has no idea how many I have or when I buy new trees :tu:

However the key things to consider are:
How many bonsai you can fit in the available space without them competing for light/air/water. (This can be increased by building tiered benches to maximise the available space.)
How many trees you can adequately maintain in your available time. (Starters and growing on stock don't need much maintenance but refined trees do).

Early on in my bonsai life I used to buy just about everything I liked but now it's about quality not quantity for me. Last year at our Market Day (shameless plug) I sold or gave away over 60 trees and only purchased 1.

I do however have roughly 170 in my collection which is too many for me to adequately maintain - so I'll be offloading lots for CHEAP at the AusBonsai Market Day on Saturday 7th March 2015 ;)

Steven

I wish I could do this but there is nowhere near enough space or light on my desk in the office.

It helps a little that the boss is self employed and built his own Office / Yard. !
His desk overlooks the Koi pond and Bonsai garden!

After my 3 most recent acquisitions (which are all actual bonsai, not prebonsai), as well as being gifted 4 mallsai it would appear that I am approaching s-1.

So I am looking into renting space in the parents garden for planting to de-clutter my balcony.

This equation is solid.

Except unlike the shoes/clothes they hoard our trees have a potential resell value.

I had been advised by my better half that it was in my best interests to buy some shelves and relocate my trees from "everywhere" to the shelves. Turns out that there was still space on said shelves so my collection is growing again. :hooray:

But soon I will need more shelves...

I am potentially in quite serious trouble, I have no partner to complain and 18 acres of land. :palm:

Just packed my car with all my stuff and my trees, the drive will take approximately 10-11 hours.

Just leave the front door unlocked, I'll let myself in.

I have to be careful ! I manage a large wholesale plant nursery so my collection of plants in general can get out of hand quickly but my fiancé loves plants and gardening and has a few of her own and we often go on walks where she will hve a go at pointing out botanical names of plants I'm teaching her, she also has a huge interest in my other hobby which is listening to as much heavy metal as possible ! .. What can I say I'm a lucky fella

The number of spaces on the shelves and benches plus 1.
After working on a tree I always have trouble finding a space to put it back! :lost:

It is an interesting question, and one I have been giving some thought to lately with a move to a new house. I agree that there should only be as many as you can easily manage. For me there are a total of 200 trees, spanning 12 varieties. These trees are in various stages of refinement and development. There are 120 trees growing in ground in order to increase trunk size etc, and a further 80 that are either in squat pots and having branches refined or are in bonsai pots.

Of the 200 trees my target is to reduce the numbers over the next 10 years mainly by selecting the best of the trees and disposing of the remainder. I am hoping to get down to about 40 in total, with 30 in bonsai pots and the other 10 being refined or having branches developing. Hopefully the breakup in sizes will be about 80% shohin and the remaining 20% being between 75 and 100cm in height. This will coincide with retiring so I will have the time to spend on the trees that I have.
