Essentially, by saying the word bonsai, it means an actual bonsai. Not many people at all would have the ability to look after a large number of actual bonsai.
Starter stock, trees in training, etc etc require much less attention. However, having said that, I think I've got somewhere in the number of 180 starter stock and stock in training. No bonsai, so they are easily maintained. But when it is time to repot, it is a heck of a lot of work. I have realized I have far too much stock. I would like to eventually have about 40 or so bonsai. But I will have to really advance my skills to get there.
I just see it as, I grow a large number of starter stock, and of those probably 1 in every 2 will make just good stock, so it will be culled to about 90 eventually. Then in time, probably 30 of those will be fairly nice.

I style Bonsai naturally, just as they would appear in the wild.

has to be by far the best quote i have ever read on here and if that was the case i would have 500 plus starters as well as at least 40 bonsai as well as about 200 seedlings and i still wouldnt even be close to my wife's shoe and handbag count lol

Re: How many bonsai is many is too many?
I am a fan of your logic. Used it last night in a discussion, went down real well. Then I followed up with this one.Graeme wrote:There really is no such thing as "to many Bonsai", but (and there is always a but), how many Bonsai can you manage is a better question. Now I figure somewhere around 12 or so Bonsai would be a pretty good number. Therefore I would like to see that number in my display area (which should be coming soon). Now, the other X number of trees sitting in foam boxes, not in the display area are not considered Bonsai are they? I don't consider them so, therefore I only have 12 Bonsai and everyone is happy.
And I believe I came out the winner of that discussion, but alas the lounge is never as comfortable as the bed.PJs Ronin wrote:(number of bonsais) = (# pairs of shoes she has) * (# handbags she has) * (# years of marriage)
She then remineded me in the morning that we aren't married, so in fact I can't have any.

In the cycling world the below formula is used, could work for bonsai...
"While the minimum number of bikes one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner."

It comes down to SIZE, it does matter I have 40 at one and two man size and 100 minis 60 of the minis sit in an area of 1200mm x1800mm.
I think I have enough although I would like to sell the two man size trees as I am finding them a bit to hard to handle now.
Cheers Pup

When you find one on the bench that you forgot you have
A stick in a pot is better than no stick at all. Remember even the best bonsai started as a stick.

Does he collect things? If he does and the next time complains about your bonsai or shoes remind him about his collection. It usually makes them be quiet. My husband has stuff in every room. His collection is larger then the amount of bonsai I own.AirControl wrote:My husband complains about the number of shoes that I have and also about the number of bonsai. What should I do?

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. But does it work for both genders? Us blokes are used to losing arguments
