How many bonsai is many is too many?

Post by Jarad »

I have had the discussion with the missus and it would appear that 10 is the magic number (as we live in an apartment and have limited balcony space).

My question to you all is how many many bonsai ago did the partner believe you had enough?

And when does a hobby become an obsession?

Einstein may be able to help as it's all relative to space and time

As for your partner's magic number ... this ratio is usually between 30 and 60 percent of your own expectation ;) the ratio will usually gradually narrow as you discover your own limitations (of space and time) as well as cultivating your partner's interest (or tolerance)

When you're on Ausbonsai at work :palm:

My partner allows 300.
If you are allowed 10 trees per partner ....... :o

Seriously, you need adequate space to enjoy them and keep them healthy it is difficult to avoid temptation and keep the numbers manageable.

Take HEAPS of cuttings...you know for future. They're free...and when they don't take you make the swap for another starter.

Hi,

I had about 50 or so, most i would class as in training (which i could never get around) to so i culled them to about 30 including what's in a grow bed. Still a few more to get rid of but i want to get to around 10 in pots and some in grow beds I simply do not have the time or inclination to look after any that will take years to get a result unless they are good stock.

I am finding looking after them is now more enjoyable but still away to go.

I guess it depends on how keen you are long term. I am not that keen anymore, too many other things to take care. Still working to reach that sweet spot that i am happy with.

i went from none to about 30 starters in about 2 months now i am growing them from seeds multiple varieties so i have a variety of species and the rest i will slowly sell or give away the way its looking with the seeds before i know it i will have 1000 seedlings and no where to put them lol but hey my wife loves the fact i have a hobby and im not sitting round playing video games so as many as you can lol and the majority of the year its just watering them and feeding them which doesnt take long as i have set up a auto watering system through my greenhouses so just manage ur time and ur costs and you should be good
I like gardening - it's a place where I find myself when I need to lose myself.

I'm going to have a lot on the go this year, seeds and whatnot, but I'll cull them down once I get some more advanced stock (famous last words, I know :palm: )

Hahaha. Best. Responses. Ever.

You all just made me look a whole heap better so I shall be starting negotiations for at least another 5 when I get home.

Little does she know that the "fig" I am getting on the weekend is actually a group planting of 5-6 figs.

And I was mucking around with a bit of a formula. Say a bonsai needs about 0.4m^2 of space (on average). And for every 1m^2 of bonsai you will need 0.3m^2 walkway. Then take into account the partner variable (say 60%). For a 10m^2 area. I typed this example into my calculator:

((10-(.3*10))/4)*.6=10.5 bonsai per 10 square metres.

Do my numbers need tweaking or should I just go water and seasol my plants?

I have had over the years more then 10. Never at the same time as many of the first ones died. I've now got 6 and my husband has 1. I do have a habit of always wanting to buy one.
So I Say If You Got Room You Can Never Have Enough Bonsai!

I used to live in an apartment spoke to body corporate and told them I was going to start a vegi patch in an unused bit of garden at the side of the building.... Gradually the vegi patch was replaced with plants growing on for bonsai There's always a way!

There really is no such thing as "to many Bonsai", but (and there is always a but), how many Bonsai can you manage is a better question. Now I figure somewhere around 12 or so Bonsai would be a pretty good number. Therefore I would like to see that number in my display area (which should be coming soon). Now, the other X number of trees sitting in foam boxes, not in the display area are not considered Bonsai are they? I don't consider them so, therefore I only have 12 Bonsai and everyone is happy. ;)
