Root growth on very large cuttings
I have seen a large pine cutting on my street today (about 100mm girth).
Is there a possibility to grow some roots on this or would it be a waste of time?

Hi Homer911
Mate on a pine i think you would be taking a very loooong shot in taking a cutting that size , you would be best to try an air layering if you can but even then it's a long shot ,but nothing ventured nothing gained
regards

a waste of time. Pines are usually very difficult to strike even under the best of conditions. You should be able to find much better ways to waste time and space.

I'm just going to jump in here and ask if I could strike an olive with a 40mm girth? it needs a major prune at some point anyway

I have had trouble striking olives but I know they are supposed to strike easily. Perhaps the larger the better? As Gerard says, certainly worth trying that one.I'm just going to jump in here and ask if I could strike an olive with a 40mm girth? it needs a major prune at some point anyway

Most say that warmer months are probably best but autumn is also recommended. Might be getting a little cool in some places by now but still worth a try?
I also found this on an olive propagation site:
I also found this on an olive propagation site:
A commonly practiced method is propagation from cuttings.
Twelve to fourteen inch long, one to three inch wide cuttings from the two
year old wood of a mature tree is treated with a rooting hormone, planted in a
light rooting medium and kept moist. Trees grown from such cuttings can be
further grafted with wood from another cultivar.

How about Japanese maples? How tolerant are they? I have one with about 25mm branch that I want to cut.

Japanese Maples are difficult at the best of times.Homer911 wrote:How about Japanese maples? How tolerant are they? I have one with about 25mm branch that I want to cut.

But if you work out a way to get the cuttings to root and survive then you'll be famous .

There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.
