Jacaranda advice

Post by toshtony »

Hello fellow bonsai enthusiast, I came across this jacaranda at a nursery and thought I would try turning it into a bonsai has a pretty nice bend. I've noticed that there are quiet a few ppl with jacaranda experience and knowledge here, so my question is its late winter here in Melbourne is it OK to do a trunk chop and what would be the best way to regrow choped top part, feels wrong throughing it out. (Oh no is that how hoarders start) Also will steri-prune sealant be OK to use on wound.

Thanks guys any information will be well appreciated.

if you want to keep the top you will have to air layer it off. I don't know how well Jacarandas layer, but I highly doubt a cutting that size would produce roots.

Give us a pic of the whole tree and we could recommend a place to layer. If you haven't had experience with layering there are plenty of threads on here with details if you do a search.

they are dormant now so you can chop to wherever you like and in a few weeks it will shoot madly with new growth.
Never tried to layer or take cuttings, but see no reason why they will not work.

Thanks guys, here's a picture of the full tree. I might just give it the chop, if I layer it now by the time roots form and if they do it will be to late to do the chop. Just chop and leave wound or chop and cover wound with steri?

I seen Matt's post and did notice him saying to prune in winter but wasn't shore if it included trunk chomp.

Thanks again

You should be able to prune a Jacaranda any time of year but Ken is correct that soon it will start to grow so you will get quick regrowth if you chop now.
I don't think there's any point layering - that will take 6 months and you will only end up with a straight skinny jacaranda. Easier, quicker and cheaper to pay for another one if you need another jacaranda.

Steriprune will seal the cut but it is very BLACK and it stays for many years so only use it if you want a black patch on your trees for a long time. Most times a simple cut like this does not need sealing but sealing will help it heal over quicker. Bonsai sealers don't stand out so much and will peel off after the cut has healed over.

I also have a Jacaranda that I am preparing for bonsai. In my early days I put it in a shallow bonsai pot, but as I gained more knowledge, I decided to pot it into a much bigger, plastic pot where it has been for about 2 years. It is amazing how much thicker the trunk is and I prune it often as it gets very leggy shoots quickly.Image - You can see it on the right in this picture. Image

if you want to put on growth, let the shoots go mad then cut back hard to develop taper.
if you want to control the terminal growth and build ramification, then let it grow to 2 sets of leaves, then cut back to the first pair only. They will be on a short internode and have smaller leaves as well.

Just an update after months of thinking I had killed a perfect growing tree, good ole Jack started shooting from every where. Think I'm going to just let it do it's own thing for a while now.
