Is there a problem with this Azalea? Or has the sun burnt the leaves.

Hawkeye,
The light green are new leave and you have azalea lace bug. Spray with Confidor as per the instructions and it will clear eventually ;)

There is a bit more happening here than just lace bug. Its either fungal or leaf miner as well. I can see leaves curling which could indicate leaf miner. Remove all the black leaves. Open it up a bit. Over head watering when leaves are growing so tightly will create humidity and fungal problems.
Open it up a bit remove some growth to allow air flow. Spray with confidor for lace bug. Make sure to spray over and under the leaves. Also make sure it is in semi shade over summer.
Cheers

These azaleas don't make very good bonsai. I wouldn't worry about it. Time is too precious. Get something that will still be satisfying in twenty years.

But of course that's just :bump:

Just a quick question, can you use a Fungacide together with Confidor. Or wait a week or so before using the Confidor?

I would remove all the black leaves and thin it out a bit, then confidor it and see how it goes from there. Then if the black leaves keep recurring I would use the fungicide.

Ok I have thinned it out some, taken off deadwood branches, treated with Confidor. Seasoled it. Now let it rest and recover. (I did miss a few black leaves Kirky, I am going to Specsavers next week). Thank you. Will keep a close watch on it's recovery. Any more advice would be welcomed on this 12 - 15 year old Azalea.

Only thing to do now is respray confidor ina couple of weeks as per instructions making sure to spray under the leaves.
And powerfeed fortnightly to get it growing. Good luck with it.

One thing I truly dislike here in the thinned out pic is the use of that grey putty on Azaleas.
A more liquid cut paste is the go and applied immediately.
That is cut, apply...Then the next cut and apply..and so it goes.
Azaleas dry at the wound so fast.
A lift from the pot only and 'new' decomposed acid Azalea mix around the perimeter of the pot with a saturation of seasol or grow plus in a 1.5 strength.
I have around 50 Azaleas in both potted flower and bonsai forms and quite often curl appears.
Heat/dry soil/bugs are all intertwined.
Heated pots cause dry soil cause plant and root stress cause bug attack.
Remedy
Cool pots and keep cool.
Saturate soil and keep moist.
Feed to de stress.
Prune all damage.
Seal all cuts and pruning to ensure plants don't exhale carbons threw dried out wounds.
Cross fingers and keep a vigilant eye out.
(Healthy regrowth after leaf prune is indicated by flicking leaf stalks about a week after cutting leaves..If the stalk flies off a bud is created...If it stays put the bud is dead and the branch is following suit)
My take.
Steve.

Steve, very good advice, thank you. I will try and follow your suggestions. As for liquid cut paste, where do you buy this? Is it the light grey paste " KIYONAL ACE LIQUID BONSAI CUT PASTE, 2 IN 1 WOUND SEALANT & GRAFT ADHESIVE"? The cut paste I use is dark grey.
