[A Forest Tale] - Trident Maple - Akhi
Have had these trident maples for a few years now got them as seedlings from Bright in Victoria and have travelled with me to Adelaide and back to Melbourne. Though all from the same tree there are at least a couple of different types in here in terms of leaf size growth speed etc. Picture is just three roughly plonked into the pot but have a few more in normal pots which will be planted in good bonsai soil later in winter this year together as a forest.

Any chance of a larger photo, Akhi? I am having trouble seeing the detail of your trees.

Will take a better pic today. It was freezing and raining yesterday so couldn’t do a good job of it. Just didn’t want to fall foul of not meeting the extended deadline

Plant to keep it in a deep pot for now as the trees grow but the final pot I will be looking to develop is going to be a slate of a much shallower pot.

Re: [A Forest Tale] - Trident Maple - Akhi
I tried to air layers the three trees in the terra-cotta pot. Had a lot of callus but no roots had to cut anyway and have potted out in the normal black pots. Hopefully roots come forth from the callus. As for the three trees they have grown strongly where the layers were taken. Idea is to let it grow as much as it can and then deal with it in late winter. Will add trees from the earlier pots when I repot this winter.

I believe this is quite normal for trident maple to callus but not root in first air layering; they do not layer so easily as Japanese Maple . You could either re-apply the hormone and wait and see or I’ve heard of taking them as a cutting with the developed callus, use a hardwood hormone liquid/ powder and they will root as effectively a hardwood cutting
Have not personally tried it but from what I’ve read it works

Hi Akhi,
I’m looking forward to see what comes together in winter when you add it all together for the first time. Good luck.

Still planning to put it together in that terracotta pot so that there is sufficient room for the trees to grow. And probably in the winter after that move it to a bonsai pot or slab.

Finally got this in a bonsai pot.stocky trees in a forestscape is where I am planning this to be. Had to do an early autumn repot as I just ran out of time last winter!

Love these challenges as they help build a point of progression, two years since planting and added one more tree from a cutting to the group..
