hi everyone,
despite of not know the right place to put the thread, i would like to ask something that is on my mind a long time...
When is the right time to change the plastic pot to a bonsai ceramic container? COnsidering bonsai as an unfinished art?
i've been thinking about it... is this up to the bonsai enthusiast??

Re: plastic to ceramic- when?
Hi Amazon,
I have plants in cheaper 'bonsai' pots that are far from finished - but that is probably because I am new to this and couldn't wait to have something in a bonsai pot. The general opinion I seem to get is when the trunk and nebari are where you want them to be, a smaller pot can then be used. If you want the tree to grow and thicken, leave it in a grow box or the ground.

generally as far as i reckon, if the tree is a slow growing species, to leave it in the ground or grow box/pot until the nebari/trunk/main branching is sorted and you are happy with it. then it can go to an "oversized" bonsai pot, and the finer development can be finished of in that, then once complete it goes into the pot you would like the final size to be.
faster growing species, i generally keep in the ground/grow box until trunk/nebari and some main branches are the right thickness, then do the same as above.
the longer you can keep it in the grow box/ ground the quicker the development of the tree.
i suggest you read some articles on ground growing and growing for taper as these will enlighten you on what you should do
