whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
Hi all, do i have any chance of getting rid of these pests ?
They are on pretty much all my trees.....
I sprayed everything with confidor about a week ago which slowed them down but now there thriving again.
Anyone have a plan of attack for me ?
Im not sure if regular confidor is needed and if regular use of pesticides will do more damage than the pests themselves.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
First of all i don't believe these to be whitefly.
search the forums for leaf hoppers. I can be pretty sure that these are the culprits.
I don't think you will be able to get rid of them as such.
There are simply far too many to manage.
I've found confidor to be the answer for me.
It doesn't rid my trees of the critters but it seems to stop/reduce the damage.
The population comes and goes with the weather.
They will stop all together in time.
Today is a bad day for them.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
Do these look familiar?
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=pota ... 80&bih=555
Also as I said do a search on the forums there has been a bit of discussion but as yet no major solutions.
I've tried Pyrethrum, Yellow sticky sheets, beat a bug chilli stuff and confidor spray.
The only item that I have found to assist is the Confidor and as I said this has NOT reduced my plague proportioned colony of Leaf Hoppers but if last year is anything to go by it HAS significantly reduced the damage caused...
Point being - don't expect to get rid of them.
They WILL slowly die off all together as summer comes along.

You should spray 10 days apart but if confidor doesn't work, try to find rogor, lebyacid or alternate confidor with malathion.stocaz wrote:Yeah checked out the other posts, still think they may be white fly but whats more important is how often can i spray the trees safely? Weekly ok?
Its getting very hard to find products that work now. Have a look at some of the agricultural outlets or online?
Also whitefly like rather still humid conditions. Can you increase air movement? You want some wind if possible.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
I must remember to go out into the garden when I have wind.
Pyrethrum, rogor, white oil on three consecutive days has had little effect. I know of one person who has taken to them with a vacuum cleaner.

Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

This is one army adversary I have given up on
So what it seems, I think their damage are minimal as now I dont pay any attention to them and the effects to my plants I hardly notice if any

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
The trees of mine which they are attacking are all still in development and don't need to look presentable so I'm just riding it out. I did hit the tridents with some pyrethrum as they are causing the new leaves to curl a bit, it knocked them back but they are starting to come back again now. If I had some display trees they were getting stuck into I'd be a bit peeved but as I don't I'd rather not spray a bunch of chemical around the yard which is more likely to have an impact on the beneficial insects than these little buggers.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
Check out the discussion and pictures in this thread here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=13596&hilit=leaf+hoppers
That year (as the pictures will prove) I was decimated by the little buggers.
The following year by using Confidor a couple of times I was able to get through the entire year with very damage to my trees.
From the thread I also note that it appears they die right off in numbers around February!
So still some time to go I'm afraid peoples!
FWIW I'm pretty convinced they are NOT Whitefly.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
On other posts, it was suggested that planting onion in between trees helps keep pests at bay!
My wife used to plant Mary Golds (?) as a pest repellant ...
And as said above, increasing the airflow amongst your trees may also be a simple solution. Most if us seem to put our trees into a corner to stop the wind - perhaps that's working against us. A few changes might be a poison free way if controlling these and other pests... Food for thought.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
I had them all over my kale in the vege patch. I went out with the white oil in pressurised can. I knocked the kale so they all flew up as I sprayed the white oil on them. Then covered the plant in white oil. This has gotten rid of them. Good luck getting rid of yours.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
Ross the best bit of advice I can give you is get us a picture of the pests. Then we ID. Then we treat. Then if need be, we treat again with alternatives. Not necessarily with chemical either.

Re: whiteflies are KILLING ME !!!!
I'm about to try some Yates pyrethrum. I've try a chilli and garlic spray, and eco oil. Both effective short term for the ones you actually spray on, but they come back pretty quick within a day or two. I'm trying to keep it pretty natural the girl at the nursery say this was the next step up without being a full blown poison. This one is still ssafe for bees, birds and pets.
