King Billy, Celery Top and Huon Pine Seeds

Post by Jarad »

Recently my Dad gifted me some seeds for the king billy and celery top pines.

The threads for growing these guys are few and far between, does anyone have experience growing them around Sydney or further north?

I know Ray Nesci occasionally stocks Huon but he didn't have any on the weekend.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

Hope the seed germinates and grows well for you Jarad. Note that Celery top seed may take up to a year to germinate so don't give up too early.

I bought a small Huon pine when we were in Tassie last and have grown quite a few cuttings from it if anyone is desperately searching for one.
Also got a male and a female Creeping Strawberry pine - Microcachrys tetragona. Not sure how they will be as bonsai but always interesting to try new species.

Both these species seem to be happy here in the foothills of Victoria.

A handful of days of 40 C each summer, occasionally a run of 4 or 5 days over 40 in a warmer year (though nothing close to that this year). Then minimum temps of -2 and -3 are reasonably common in winter. A really cold night can reach -7C. No frost yet but won't be far away.

Your climate is a bit more extreme than mine... I guess we will see how they go.

i also got my hands on various Tasmanian conifer seeds recently - i'm keen to hear how others have germinated the seeds and their success rate
