Privet

Post by squizzy »

Hi all,

Just thought I would post a before and after haircut photo for this little privet. My advice for all beginers is dont get too many of these in your collection or you will have to quit your job and take up prunning full time.

Cheers

Hi all.

Has been a long time since I updated this thread. I have been doing a bit of work on this privet lately under the guidance if a few if the teachers at school of bonsai. Thought I might update the thread to show how far it has come. It doesn't follow this very closely the guidelines if bonsai but I find something about it fairly pleasing. Would love to hear some thoughts

so with this one i am hoping to get some definition in the foliage pads this summer and develop an apex. Its not your typical right left back informal upright but its not broom either. I think it will make a reasonable tree ( maybe shohin) in the next few seasons.

happy to hear some thoughts.

Did you do all the trunk work yourself squizz? Or was the hole somewhat natural? I think it looks great mate!

Thanks for the posts.

Haven't even thought of a pot. Not sure if I will upgrade it this year or next????? What do you suggest as a pot?

The carving was all done early in the development of the tree. Probably went a bit overboard with it but as a result have got a lot of character. It won't be everyone's cuppa but that's ok.

Nice trunk character, I would probably try and bring the foliage in a bit closer to compact the tree and help accentuate the trunk.

Great little trunk. For me the two lowest foliage masses are both on the same level, and about the same size, so the strong horizontal that sets up takes attention away from that funky trunk. I'm just wondering whether you'd consider cutting off the left branch and the top branch, and just leaving the two that go off to the right? It's an odd design, but the trunk becomes more powerful, and the tree has one clear direction.

It's just a thought. It's interesting that you thought you'd gone too far with the carving - give it a few years and it all grows in together. Nicely done.

Hi all,

Have been thinking about the feedback from others on here.

I have struggled with the branch structure on this tree a little. Do i cut? Don't i cut? Cut oh sh@t bad move you know the rest. so forgive me if I am hesitant. I find it best to draw and see if i can decide what I want so after a bit of sketching this is what I have come up with.

I think it needs that right brunch to appear lower to balance the tree?????? so filling it out like this could work.

what are your thoughts?
