Clerodendrum hetrophyllum

Hi all,

I bought this Clero about a year and a half to 2 years ago as a 1 cm thick seeding . It spent a year in the ground and thickened up amazingly fast. I then cut off the long sacrifice branches and potted into into an over sized bonsai pot. Since then it has been pruned a few times then defoliated and wired a week ago, which is where it sits at now, approximately 30 to 40 cm tall.

Great result in twelve months. You have a couple of bar branches up top you need to keep an eye on before they get too knobbly.

Super job si90 ... it's a great effort in such a short time - this species sounds like a perfect candidate for the next Ausbonsai Shohin comp!
Agree with Kirky - watch closely/cut those branches to avoid any inverse taper ... Keep posting the development.

A quick update of the roughly 1 and a half months growth.

They are a great species for bonsai but its not inerme.
C. inerme is a native species and has large oval leaves compared to this one.
The species used for bonsai, like this one, is widely misnamed. It is actually C. hetrophyllum a native of Mauritius and La Reunion. Bad luck to all those folks that think they are growing a native.
The herbarium at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens confirmed the identification in 2016.

Oh thank you for this! I have always wondered and have been searching for the real species name for a while because it doesn't look like any internet images of C. Inerme.

Update. I think the canopy is filling out nicely. The roots are a bit ugly but not too bad. I have a bunch of rooted cuttings from this tree which I am considering root grafting on to improve it. Not sure yet.

Personally, I don't mind the roots. I have seen much much uglier! (at my place..)
That great bark texture & the wide natural looking canopy you've been able to develop - These attributes are what I notice the most.

Very, very good - a lovely tree and agree that it will improve further with a different pot too. Perhaps the new pot would be a subtler colour, a tad shallower and possibly textured too?

Yep I think a new pot is called for. I'm not really sure what would suit it though. May have to have a search around online for some inspiration.
