Re: buxus japonica saved from a nursery
Im guessing it may have been that it had been there so long and not sold. When i repotted it there was only about 15%soil in the pot the rest was just roots. I shoulda taken some pics!
But i fear i may have taken too much of the roots off. I took about 60 70 percent off. Time will tell!

Re: buxus japonica saved from a nursery
60-70% root reduction does not sound harsh to me. I would fully expect it to come back strongly. I regularly take 90% or more roots off some species and well over half off nearly every tree I repot.

Agreed, I remove two thirds of the roots of most plants too. You will not see much happening over winter. You just have to wait for it to recover.

My plan is to leave it till late next year and in the mean time stare at it and decide how i want it to look.
It did have a few branches quite low on the trunk that i removed and the rootbase already looks pretty nice.
Absolutely love the bark on this tree!

Hi Fezz. Do you plan to plant the colander? Maybe cover more mix over the roots also and wire the young shoots

And im just using the colander at the moment because it makes a cheap pot with good drainage at 1 dollar 50! And i don't own any bonsai pots yet. Im just starting to collect some neat looking trees and letting them grow while i find some pots i like.
