I found these pics of work I did on a scots pine a month ago so I thought I'd put them up for those interested.
The tree had a nice trunk bud lacked a front branch and so after a failed graft attempt I decided to go drastic. I'ts one of those ideas that pops into your head by pure chance.
I don't have a before pic but the idea was to use a high side branch to bring round to the front. Unfortunately the only way to do the was to split the trunk and separate the branch from it. That way I could twist it anti- clockwise and bring it into position - as much as is possible.
This pic show the first cut and a bit of wood removed

The branch pulled out and twisted around bringing it to the front of the tree

Now the tree has a front branch and I can continue to develop it. I will post an update in a year.

Brillant Mike and very game. Definitely needed a front branch. I love scotts pine yet havent got one as yet. I have a large mugo coming back to me soon
