How's this white pine? I believe it's pretty famous in Japan and I can see why. A perfect tree in my eyes.
The way it has been treated over the years shows real restraint and respect. I think it takes a lot to just leave something (apart from maintain). Something I still need to learn.

Cannot agree more Mike,

The 3rd tree in your original post, it evokes a feeling that it could have been your avatar tree before it lost the upper portion of the tree where the energy has redirected its course.

For me, neglect, provided one is keeping the tree healthy throughout this period, is time well spent.

Great thread, makes us think.

Cheers

This tree is not Japanese and I'm not even sure what it is but it's one of the finest deciduous trees in existence in my opinion. I don't know where to look first. Everything about it is fantastic. The asymmetry, the branch distribution, the base the ramification. Just mouth watering. The pot is totally wrong though. This tree deserves a beautiful shallow formal and rectangular Japanese pot to really set it off. I wish I had a better picture.

The feature....a straight trunk lacking in taper.
Second trunk aiding juxtaposition. Love it.

One trunk without the other =

[WAVING HAND SIGN]
True they dont work individually
Maybe a little heavy on top?
I dont think the tension between curved and straight is surreal enough apart from were the lines collide
Apart from that its enough to keep u interested

A procumbens where the urge to peel the bark has been resited. To very good effect I think.

An old spruce. Not a very good picture. Most people would want to wire it and ''sanitize'' it. Bring branches down etc. Going anywhere near this tree with wire would destroy it in my opinion. If you really look at it, you can see the wind rushing through the branches and the image transports you to a lonely mountain top or a windswept cliff overlooking the sea. It's really the essence of bonsai and perfect in my eyes. It has taken me over 30 years to see things like this. Now when I look at my trees, there is something missing....but I'm working on it.... :reading:

I agree treeman, that is a fantastic looking tree... I'm guessing a shot of it with foliage doesn't exist?
