Duranta stump

Post by jgmansell »

Hi all,
I view this site daily but rarely post due to the fact that I do not have any real bonsai skills, just a bonsai fan for about ten years but still very little ability to picture what the tree should look like before I start. I dug this Duranta yesterday from my daughters place as it was about to be removed and dumped. I would appreciate any info on this species, what is its chance of survival planted in a large container as I have very little space available? Shaping plans if it does survive? Planting angle? I live in Brisbane.
Thanks to all who make this site great,
john

Hi John and welcome. I would do it as a slanting style. These things are pretty bulletproof so it should be OK in a styro box or even a plastic tub with some drainage holes drilled in it.

Thanks Bougy Fan,
I have just bought a cheap plastic container so hopefully it will stand up to the sun for 12 months while it recovers. Good to hear that they are bullet proof, maybe even I can keep it alive. I will post again if it survives. :fc:

I think you should have a good chance of keeping it going ok, as long as you don't let it dry out while it's re-establishing itself.

Raft or slanting would be my suggestion too...but I don't think it matters until you've gotten it over the slump of being root pruned and repotted.

Good luck.

My first thought was raft style however it is a shame to waste such a beefy trunk so I would explore every possibility with upright or slanting first.

 Lane,
Curious as to why you think the beefy trunk might be wasted as a raft? :lost:
I was thinking raft like the below where most of the trunk would be still be fully exposed.

Thanks to all who have given advice so far, it is very much appreciated. My first thought was that although it would make a great raft, there is plenty of dead wood that may end up hidden, although the picture posted by Lane could be a possibility. Still plenty of time to think about it before a decision is made. Will post again further down the track.

Pot and leave in shade for about 1 mth and gradually introduce sunlight over the next month. Maybe water once a week. Bit of seasol occasionally to help strengthen roots

Thanks Trent. I have it in crate, watered with season, but might move into shadier position.

Just thought I would post this link to Duranta as maybe some do not know it's toxicity - even in handling it can cause dermatitis.https://www.news-mail.com.au/news/deadl ... d/2410430/
