Fruit on ficus microcarpa

Post by billyc89 »

Trimming back a few of my figs today and found a few little fruit. I always thought they never set fruit in a pot... Has anyone else's set fruit before? I don't think it's due to stress as it is immensely healthy. I never had any fruit on mine in when I lived in qld and find it odd that one would set fruit this far south (Hobart, TAS). By the way, it is a 3 year old cutting grown plant.

Hi billy,
Had the same last year on a willow leaf fig. Thought it was a problem; experts said it is a good sign meaning the plant was healthy. Hope yours is to ;)

Thanks for the info Rod! Just thought it was weird as I swear in one of my books it says ficus bonsai never fruit.
Cheers

Hi Billy

It is not all that unusual for bonsai figs to fruit. The native fig, the sandpiper fig can fruit at least twice a year in a bonsai pot.

I did notice that in the pictures there appears to be aphids on the tree. This does need treatment.

Thanks for the info Dennis, yes aphids - as well as broad mites and scale are a constant problem as I have to keep them in a glasshouse at my work to keep them happy. Stock quite often comes in infested. So much so that everything gets sprayed once a month with a strong systemic insecticide!!
