Beautiful shot and Canada? i presume. They live through this every year over there and don't miss a beat.

The image was taken by Svetlana Kazina on the edge of Lake Teletskoye (Gorny Altai, Siberia, Russia).

Clearly it's been stolen from the 500px site and shared all around the world, to the wonder and joy of others, sadly the photographer very rarely gets the kudos they deserve for taking the shot.

No reflection on you, Sue, I just get so peeved by the lack of concern for the effort photographers put into their work, only to have them lifted and shared without attribution. I did a google image search to find the owner, and it has been listed in a hellalotta different sites online..

And yes, tis a lovely shot.

You know what's really bugging me now? The fact that the copyright watermark seems to be nothing to do with the name of the person who's uploaded it to 500px, so it's probably even been stolen for that upload....arrrggghhhhh

Yes Mel, you are right and I did not do due diligence to see who took it.I assumed the credit at bottom was the photographer....duh me .....and yes congrats and kudos to the photographer. I put up a lot of images on Morguefile which can be downloaded for free so this too may have come from such a site. The feed ( on my Facebook) this morning had several other Russian photographers listed...just not this image which grabbed me immediately.

You don't need to go to Canada to see this.
Not quite as spectacular as the Canadian icicles but I see this most winters in my backyard.
Icicles 2009-1.JPG
You may not be aware that it is actually warmer encased in ice or snow than outside in really bitter cold nights. That plant is actually quite snug at just below freezing while out in the air it may be many degrees colder. Winter trekkers build snow caves and Innuit (used to) live in igloos to survive cold nights and freezing blizzards

Watch this space! I am personally aware of companies that now specialise in acquiring the rights to such images. They then trawl the internet searching for unauthorised use of the images and pursue them for damages for breach of copyright. There are numerous businesses in Australia currently being pursued for this.

And as a photographer, many of these people have my works removed because I'm using a word that someone has copyrighted!!! They drive me freaking crazy having my images taken down just because I've named it using the names that the models work under... I had one of two women who are known as Ivory Flame and Ella Rose, both ladies have used those model names for over a decade, but a recent start up called ella and ivory decided that I wasn't allowed to use the title I'd given my image because it was too close to their company name!

Another model is Sylph Sia....and because Singapore Airlines and a few other people have companies that use the letters SIA all my images with her name in the title were removed...

so....pluses and minuses when it comes to "copyright" infringements...

I've wasted hours proving the works are mine, they've taken over a year to be reinstated, only to be taken down a week later...

The icicles at my place are from leaving the auto sprays on when the temp dips below freezing. Water comes out of the sprays above freezing but quickly cools when it touches something and freezes. More dropletss collect and freeze to make the icicles.
I assume the first picture is a tree near a waterfall where minute droplets of spray are landing on this tree all night and creating the icicles. it probably gets encased like this every night the temp gets low enough and the wind is from the right direction.

Speaking of clinging to life

Post by Beano »

Beautiful images! Interesting that you have to protect from frost, but you also have to protect from heat too, Neil? Is that right? I’m getting a sense of the seasons now I live in Adelaide, but in Cairns, no heat, no frost, can repot all year round! But we couldn’t have very awesome trees (like maple, cherry, apricot, oak, anything gorgeous and deciduous!

As for image copyright, I am an amateur stock photographer and I sell photos through istockphoto.com. They have an entire legal department dedicated to fraud prevention and copyright breaches. Many people do not realise that just because you find an image on the internet it does not mean it is free or in the public domain to distribute. Only the owner of the copyright has the right under international copyright law, to reproduce or distribute a photo. The consequences of caught are financially severe, even if you plead ignorance. The owner of the copyright is the person who took the photo. Not the owner of the camera or the owner of the website. The rights to the image or the copyright may be given to someone else, sold to someone else, or you can license the use to a person. The use can be sublicensed also depending on contracts made between the licenser and the copyright owner.

An important example if you’re a professional or amateur photographer as a means of earning income, is not to share images you intend to make profit from on Facebook or Instagram, even if you have watermarked them. These entities have fine print in their terms of service that give them the right to sublicense your photos as soon as you share them on those social media platforms.

Anyway. Tipsy rant about copyright over. Resume original topic...

The further you get from the ocean the greater the temperature swings. Central Australia probably has the largest temperature differences in Australia.
We are lucky that it does not get as hot here as some places but we do get regular 40C+ in summer, often for a week at a time. Up to about 43C max. Winter temps are not quite as cold as Canberra because they are at a higher elevation (gets colder as you go higher) Gets down below freezing most nights in winter and has been -7C occasionally. -2 is normal cold winter night here, almost always followed by a sunny day.
Cloudy days/nights stop heat escaping from the atmosphere so it is usually above freezing if it is overcast but no sun means cloudy days are quite cold in winter.
It only needs to be -2 or -3C to get those icicles if there is droplets to freeze. Usually if it is below 0C there is little moisture in the air. If it is raining it must be above freezing temp and if it is snowing the air moisture is already frozen so does not form these icicles. Hail usually forms in thunderstorms so hail is usually in warmer months.
Icicles need a source of liquid water - my sprays or mist from a waterfall like the first pic - added to sub 0 air temps.
