Sequoia Sempervirens - Coast Redwood

Post by alpineart »

This was collected a few years ago and planted out in the garden
PB100035.JPG
, unfortunately it has to go being over 4 metres high . A bit of a trim then off with its head

Rather than waste a good trunk
PB100040.JPG
PB100044.JPG
I have hacked and chopped it , then ripped and tore the meat off the bones to produce a nice rather large trainer

. That was 45 minutes of fun for the day 8-) , now I'm definitely in trouble with the wife

Getting it out of the ground will take months as the root mass is around 2-3metres in diameter , an axe and shovel will take care of those issues .

The finished trunk is 950mm high ,the base is 250mm at ground level with slight movement and some good taper hacked into it

That's is a great progression in such a short time. It's given me ideas for my Juniper now. Was grappling with the idea of taper on a straight trunk

Hi Akhi , mate it was a good fun project , taper can be either real as in the deadwood or an illusion as in 'v' cutting bark creating an illusion of taper and movement .

Hi no idea , mate its not fear , its the challenge itself , I just love hacking and chopping big material . I could have dug the little clump style trunk not but that wasn't much of a challenge ..

The base is 300 x250 and stands 950 high to the top of the jin , its not the finished design just keeping it alive .

Alpineart... please take this next comment in the good nature that it is meant.

You're taking the P!5S ... I mean this thread and your vision is (f-bomb) audacious.

Hi MJL , Its the easy part that's the fun , now the serious side starts , keeping it alive and moving it

Hi Thymetraveller its a big bugger that's for sure , slip potting it down into a smaller pot in a year or two will be the challenge .

Hi fishnfreak , mate these came from a test plot in the N.E Victoria region . Only 1 tree in the entire 5 acre plot actually produced self sown seedlings . Not easy to find in a nursery and not sure if the Beechworth bush fire a few years ago destroyed the plot as the Douglas Fir test plot was burnt and completely destroyed which was bordering the Redwoods .

Cheers . Alpine
