[A Forest Tale] Keels - Casuarina Cunninghamiana
Gday again, My second entry into the forest competition are these beautiful river she-oaks seedlings. I've grown from seed the two seedlings on the far right. I collected the seed two years ago when we were at the river at Australia day celebrations. The others are from the recent native plant sale at the botanical gardens in October.
Anyway I'll keep you posted. Cheers.
My plans are pretty simple at this stage. I'll head out and pick up a fruit box. Then I'll plant the seedlings together. Hoping the extra room in the fruit box will allow the seedlings to put on some size in the trunks before going into a bonsai pot.Anyway I'll keep you posted. Cheers.

Re: [A Forest Tale] Keels - Casuarina Cunninghamiana
Quick update on my Casuarina group. This group has been planted together since sometime late Feb . I thought i took some pictures and recorded the date but looks like I've lost them.
I was worried that i'd loose a couple of the seedlings as i planted them together very late in the year. Not much to really show at this stage, you can see that the middle tree is definitely the strongest. If you have a keen eye you will spot the rare Albino Cunninghamiana to the left of screen. There are afew others that are barely hanging on as well . I have placed the tray into another tray of soil as the roots started coming out almost 5 weeks ago. This should give the trees more room to grow.

A fine head of hair indeed, (with the odd ahem exception) - this will be fun to work with. If you don't mind, could I point out that they appear at least in the photo to be fairly much all in one line. If you can get a thicker clump with a bit of depth, fading away to a thinner string of trees, it might be more fun. Alternatively, you could run a string of rocks along the front, and portray a scene beside a river.

Your comments are always welcome Gavin. Yeah i guess they all do appear to be in a line. I've spread them out but yeah pretty much all in a straight line now you mention it. I'll have to get some better close up photos to show you what I've done so you can explain it a bit better for me but i think i know what you mean. Maybe I'll bring it in to the club when they start back up. CheersGavinG wrote: ↑June 15th, 2020, 2:57 pm .... I'll be watching this with interest as I also have a forest of a similar species, mine are Casuarina idon'tknowii (very rare) and I need every idea I can get. Good start and gutsy potting late but that may be a winner.

Sorry to have to contradict you Watto, but the cas. idon'tknowii is not rare. I think most of us who have collected seeds or yamadori have some of those, I have several.
Cheers, Frank.

I have one too! Mine has gone all white and dry, which I assume is its dormant winter state.Raging Bull wrote: ↑June 16th, 2020, 8:41 pm Sorry to have to contradict you Watto, but the cas. idon'tknowii is not rare. Re: [A Forest Tale] Keels - Casuarina Cunninghamiana
Quick update. The trees are starting to put on some size now. They only started taking off once the heat kicked in. Happy with the progress so far. Not bad for the first 12 months. Keen for the next 12.

Re: [A Forest Tale] Keels - Casuarina Cunninghamiana
I noticed the forest keeps drying out and it isn't even hot yet. So i thought I'd wack it into a new grow container. Something i can stack to get more growth later this year. The old container was starting to crumble so it was a good idea to change it. The roots have been going nuts.
Before i removed the container. Front - you can start to see which trees are more vigorous. Interesting there is one tree thats still the same size as when i planted them together. Rear view The roots in the bottom container Afterwards including a light trim.
