Partial defoliation is an incomplete leaf pruning of the foliage of a bonsai.

By selective removal of leaves, the bonsai grower can cause light and air to penetrate to interior branches. Typically, partial defoliation involves removal of leaves in the outer and upper canopy, helping to restore strength to the interior of the tree.
