Since 1977
Catlin elm. A variety of Chinese elm. Dating back to the mid 1960s, this tall elm was grown from nursery stock. When purchased it was first grown in a bonsai pot and then planted in the ground for 5 - 6 years in order to develop faster. From then on, it was trained as a bonsai, gradually acquiring the look of a venerable giant. Note the heavy trunk base and the low growing branches.
