Balancing Rock/Stone Henge Park

On my recent road trip to Canberra I managed to locate a park where a mate and I visited 25 years ago. I had ‘looked’ for it on my previous road trip to Sydney last year, but obviously didn’t look very well as I drove straight past it. We spent a couple of hours there 25 years ago and I still have a large granite slab that I collected from there. I was very excited to find it again and spent an hour walking around, only this time I had a camera and took some pics. It is just south of Glen Innes in the high plains country of the ‘Granite Belt’, and it is beautiful country around there. It is 1100m above sea level around here and gets nice and cold in winter.

The park has a good variety of trees including Pines, Cedars, Alders, Beech, English Elm, Hawthorn, Poplars and Cypress mingled with some native species as well. A feature of this area is also the rocks that appear to have been placed in a giants playground. There were more balancing on each other, but there is evidence that some of these have fallen over the years as the cold has split them apart. Most of the pines have grown from seeds deposited in the cracks and have blown the rocks to bits over the years also.

This place gave me loads of inspiration all those years ago and was a pure joy to wander through these grounds again

Juniper Air Layer second styling

The original post can be found HERE on the first styling of this tree.

It is time now to do some more. Actually it is probably overdue. The last pics were from Sept 2012 and it is time to remove the wire from the first styling and do some fine wiring to start to develop the branch pads. The growth has been strong and it is time for a prune. Some more refinement is still needed as not all the tertiary branches have developed and the apex also needs to fill out more.

The tree will be let rest again and grow to fill out the apex and develop more secondary and tertiary branches. I think spring will see it in a pot as the roots are getting nice and strong and it will be stable enough in a Bonsai pot. The growth will be controlled more over the coming months to keep what has developed and get the growth where I want it. It still appears heavy on the upper left, but that is because I need more growth yet on the upper right. It will balance out nicely over the coming months.

National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia

On the 2nd of February 2013, the NBPCA was officially opened at its new permanent site within the new National Arboretum in Canberra, Australia’s National Capital City. I drove some 1350 km’s for this event (crazy) as it is the most important event for Bonsai in this country. On display are around 80 Bonsai either loaned or donated from Bonsai artists around the country, and is a magnificent showcase for Australian Bonsai. We have some very talented artists in this country growing a diverse range of species, and it was a truly magnificent weekend. I hope you enjoy the photos and get a chance to visit Canberra sometime to check it out.

Plenty more to show, but I need to give you incentive to check it out for yourself. The AABC Ltd National Bonsai Convention featuring Ryan Neil will be held in Canberra in May and will be the perfect time to have a look. Hope to see you there.

Lilly Pilly Raft

This Lilly Pilly has been through some hard times. It was gifted by a long time student of mine to a friend of hers as a 5 tree raft. A couple of years later it was returned almost dead, and lost the 2 central trunks as a result and most of its branches. Over the last few years we have been recovering growth and strength, and it has come back well. It is a Syzygium paniculata and flowers and fruits well in the pot. Fruit is edible.

The owner has never been real happy with it, but her opinion has been improving with the growth of the tree. I have always liked something about it and thought it would come up well as it ages. In another case of ‘I have too many Bonsai’, I was given this tree to add to my collection. I will keep this one as it always looks fine with good foliage. As an Australian Native it will be a good Bonsai to use for displays. It is getting covered in flower buds and should open soon as long as all the rain we are getting this weekend doesn’t bugger it up.

17Dec2012 (1) (Medium)

The tree as I was given it. Still young, but nice and simple.

17Dec2012 (2) (Medium)

From the back. The small trunk is connected by a root.

17Dec2012 (3) (Medium)

You can see all the trunks nicely from the side

17Dec2012 (4) (Medium)

From the left side. The main trunks lean forward nicely

 17Dec2012 (5) (Medium)

Lots of flower buds forming. Here you see the buds, the open flower and the start of the berry on the lower left

 17Dec2012 (6) (Medium)

Wanted to leave all the flower bud so only a light haircut for now

17Dec2012 (8) (Medium)

I see a change of planting angle at next repot, but it has only been done recently and will be left till later

27Jan2013 (Medium)

As it looks today all soaking wet. 27 January 2013. The flower buds are swelling all over and it will not belong before they all pop. This one usually fruits well also, so the display lasts a while.

The pot will change some time down the track, but it will do for now, and the public will love it on display. It needs a longer pot to allow some open ground on the left and get the trunk away from the edge of the pot. It may even go in a free form or on a slab.

2013

Hello Viewers

I hope everybody had a great Christmas / New Year period with family and friends.

My apologies for being so quiet on the posts, but I have had the pleasure of 3 weeks off this year with 17 days camping at the beach. Very relaxing.

I have come home to many overgrown trees that had been condensed under a sprinkler system. A couple of losses to small trees that missed enough water, but otherwise happy how they fared through the heat. I have plenty of work to do and will post updates as I get into it.

It has already been a big start to the year for me as I have had confirmation that I have been selected as a demonstrator at the World Bonsai Friendship Federation’s World Bonsai Convention in China in September. I am very excited at this opportunity as it has been a goal of mine for many years. One other from Australia and one from New Zealand will make up our 3 person team representing the Australia / New Zealand region of the WBFF. There will be over 30 of us from around the globe in one massive simultaneous demonstration event. They were to be judged with Gold, Silver and Participation Certificates on offer, but I am not sure if this is still happening.

I have also just applied for what I would call my career goal job, and dream job, of Curator of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia, opening in Canberra in February. I feel I have been working towards a position like this for nearly 30 years and would relish the opportunity to gain an interview for this position. Any positive thoughts you can put out there for me would be greatly appreciated.  🙂              The position starts at the end of January so I will know soon enough.

I will be a bit distracted untill things sort themselves out, but will have to get pruning and feeding again, so I will be updating some posts soon.

Update 25 January.

Due to the work needing to be done for the opening on the 2nd Feb, they will not be viewing applications till after the 4 Feb. Only a slight delay but just a bit more waiting. I am going down for the opening anyway to check out my new location  😉
