G'day, my sister lives in regional Vic and they have a cherry tree in their back yard. It sends out millions of runners all the time. Last time I was there I pulled out 2 large clumps of them, and from this separated each clump, not I have 19 growing well, all in little plastic pots for now. But they seemed to have survived the separation. I did this about 2 or 3 months ago, they look still healthy, so I am expecting lots of nice growth come spring.

:D

19 cherry trees, god knows what i will do with 'em all :!:

Marc has pointed out a very good way to get these trees. Not only can they have gnarly bases, they wont be grafted like the ones you can purchase.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I was going to ask the same question and figured this would be better than doing a new thread!

I'm also after a Sakura (Cherry Blossom) bonsai, or little starter, hopefully around the Sydney area so I could get one whilst I'm up that way later this month? Does anyone know where I might find one?

Cheers :D
P.S Would they take very well to inland NSW sort of climate?

Hello,
My name is tash, I have looked for a Cherry Blossom Bonsai in South Australia but haven't found any as of yet. I want to buy one for my best friend as she LOVES cherry blossom trees. It is her birthday in Sept. So I want to hopefully have one for her. Does anyone have any information that could help me or know of any where I could find one to buy? It would help me so much!!! :)
Thanks :)

Bonsai South in the Sydney area usually has some beautiful Cherry Blossom trees. I would give them a call first but I bought a beautiful large one there about a year ago and it is thriving and just finished flowering. Top quallity trees at Bonsai South. :)

I have a weeping cherry, that you can layer a large branch off it if you want....

This is a very old thread but someone may still be watching.
Please note that the vast majority of Cherries in Australia will be grafted onto a commercial root stock so suckers from around the tree will NOT be the same as the tree.
Mazzard is probably the most used cherry root stock and is P. avium
Recently some newer root stocks have been introduced. Some I can find are hybrids of P. cerasus and P. canescens but as far as I am aware none will be the Japanese flowering cherries.
Root stocks tend to have stronger growth with larger leaves so not really a good choice for bonsai despite being easy to get and to grow.

the ones found in sydney bonsai nurseries are Prunus Okame you may need to go to a bunnings or specialty nursery to find other types.
