I would like to keep the top half of this pine for another bonsai, it's had alot of work done to it, it would be too much to lose as just a sacrifice. Last year i layered a Melaleuca at this time and its doing really well, lost of roots.
Any opinions on when i should attempt to layer this?

Re: Air layer Black pine
Hi,
I am in Melbourne too, I have done one and only black pine before. Please see this post viewtopic.php?f=38&t=317 .
With yours one, I would try to imagine that the layer works, and what branches on top I should not need. I will trim them off 2 or 3 weeks before
layering takes place. Yours is rather strong on the top.
Please keep us posted.
Good luck and best regards.

Re: Air layer Black pine
I layered 2 JBP obtained from Koreshoffs before the closed. Put them on at the start of winter 2008, and removed them in early Sept 2008.
I put 2 layers on 1 tree, and 1 on another and they all worked fine.
I used the Spagnum moss and sand mix in a pot tied around the tree

Re: Air layer Black pine
So long as each section has enough room o get the pot in there, and to also have a branch with foliage in it then go for it
I takes the same time for 1 layer to take as does 3 of them
