Brrr. Really cold day here in Adelaide. Must be time to drag out this plum and give it a trim.

No before photos, I just quickly took it into the shed and turned on the heater and the radio before taking down last season's growth. I didn't let it grow as high as I did compared to previous years as I'm no longer trying to thicken the branches, just trying to get the secondary branches in place.

Last winter I planted in into a smaller container with a finer mix as it needs to slow down.

Once again the scar needs development but overall I'm liking the way this tree is heading.

Its really developing. In relation to the uro, I wouldn't take it to the soil level as it will induce rot, but a little deeper would be nice IMO.

Another year, another round of pruning. The ramification is starting to build on this tree and there are even a couple of flowers poking their heads out. I had planned to repot this year but last year's leaves were still hanging on and I hadn't noticed that the new growth had already started, so I guess I'll try again in 12 months.

Very nice Matt, I like your chosen front, or the second last pic both look good to me. Love Plums, may I ask why prune now and not after flowering? Is it due to the energy of producing flowers?

To be honest I pruned when I did because I had the time to do it. I've been concentrating on first thickening the primary branches and then starting on the ramification, and getting it to flower hasn't been considered much. However now that a few flower buds have appeared I should start pruning later. It's such a vigorous tree that I don't think letting it flower will slow it down much.

Thanks mate. I haven't had a chance to trim it up, plus it still has plenty of leaves, but I'll post an update once it's done.

Tidied this up a bit today. The leaves held on for longer than usual but there was no dieback and the ramification is slowly building. I’m still not thinking about flowering much but I might get a few in Spring. The carving still needs to be improved too but that’s for another day.

Very nice Matt, pic two is my leader for the front now, the trunk seems to be getting a few diagonal lifelines in this view and will look amazing in a few years when it bulks and barks up a little more

Love a good plum and this is on the way.

Nice progress! The transformation is great! As a beginner, it really helped me visualize how you're able to train and shape the tree through its different growth stages. Following to see where you go with this one.
