Tridents be moving already!

Had good success with my crab apples, a dozen or so so far have germinated

On Saturday, I dropped a bunch of cones off to Mike - who was eager to get some Cedar seeds - seems he may have some viable seeds - who yet knows?

Given that success- I walked to my source of trees on Sunday arvo. No more cones ... excepted a couple of half, dirty and bird eaten cones on the ground. My dog Hadley looked at me in an odd way when I picked them up. Sunday arvo, I broke the two halves open and put whatever seeds I had in warm, nearly hot water and left them overnight. At lunchtime today - needing a break from work- I noted that some had sunk and duly plucked them out with tweezers and lay them on a bed of moist sphagnum top with a moist paper tower and cover with another. Into the fridge they go.

I have never tried to get seeds to propagate. Quite excited albeit I don’t hold much hope from two half eaten cones left to humans by the galahs up high.

It’s quite funny - a few years back when I heard of people putting seeds in the fridge - I said on this forum that if that happens -
I am pretty sure my wife will leave me. I sincerely hope she doesn’t

No signs of life in my fridge - at least not from the seeds ... some older cheese might be growing some greed stuff though.

The rest of my cedar seeds have shown no life either, but the first 8 seem to be doing well.

This is probably a silly question but are they supposed to show signs of life in the fridge or at some point do I transfer them outside into seed trays when the weather starts to warm?

Quite a few species will germinate at fridge temps so need to check regularly and pot up when some have roots.
Other species will not germinate at the temps in fridge. If no sign of germination after the stratification period then plant them out in pots as the weather warms up and that they start when it gets warmer.

Some tridents (I think). The persimmon seeds are swelling but no sign of green sprouts

Bit late to the game but I finally got around to getting some trident maple seeds in the fridge. I also collected some Japanese maple seeds but I think I'll skip those to avoid setting myself up for disappointment.

I was thinking the same thing as Terry. I’m probably fortunate but Chinese and Japanese elm self-seed from trees in my courtyard and I have had very few problems with Japanese maple seedlings - making some nice group plantings. Enjoy Greg.

So far all I've managed to do is kill one after attempting an air layer - the whole thing slowly turned black and died. It was in a very poorly-draining mix which probably didn't help! Nothing to lose by giving some seedlings a go I suppose!

Don’t worry about it, airlayering is a very stressful for a plant, I’ve had many fail to take, and many have grown crap roots. They are not a guaranteed thing, don’t let a failure put you off.
