Here's a photo of where my crabapples are at tonight. A bit of genetic difference there, a couple with dark purple leaves, most are green.

Are the crabs all from this season?

Yep, all from fruits collected this year, all germinated in the last couple of months

Found the same thing with some I germinated last year

Hey folks ... am I too late ... just opened my little box in the fridge ... seems my cedrus
have sprouted! Is it too late to plant them out into a little covered seedling tray? Have I missed my window perhaps - they may have been like this a few weeks?

They look like they will be fine MJ. As long as they aren't dry they should be good to go.

I'm 90% sure the growth is the root tip so plant down, saying that, when they're this small it doesnt really matter, they'll sort themselves out in no time. Congrats on a successful stratification

Roots always emerge first and the cedars are no exception so those are all roots showing. Looks like you have excellent germination rate.
They are in great shape to pot up now. You can put each one that has a root into its own pot or plant them all into a tray if you want to keep the roots flatter.
Wet the others again and keep them damp until more sprout or you could plant them all out now but remember that some of those seeds will be infertile and will not grow.
You can even pinch out the growing tip of germinating seedlings like this if you are brave enough. Pruning the roots this early makes them start to grow lateral roots right from the start.

I had another 3 sprout in the fridge, one had grown long but then dried out and shrivelled up (I'd given up on the stragglers and hadn't been checking ). But a day and a half after putting in a pot on Friday and it was growing strong. Yours look MUCH better than that one did! I'm sure they'll do well.
The sprouts are roots. The seed case pushes up out of the surface and stays on top like a little helmet for a few days before the needles break out.

Thanks everyone. At lunchtime, I planted 21 seeds that had sprouted and another three that had not! Some I left in the fridge. Numerous seeds were quite long - in that they had pierced the paper towel and found there way into the sphagnum moss - perhaps -1.5-2cm! Some of these I trimmed before planting aka - Shibui’s suggestion. All quite exciting really and now I wait with anticipation for any signs of free life in stage two!!


Fogged up and creating their own heat and moisture within the hr. And Kirky, they are only 1-2 mm under the surface.

Late to the party but here are my current seedlings, some tridents from Shibui from last year, that were shown in autumn sometime. Ive just repotted them into this foam box and some individual ones in the little green pots. Might put some together as a forest after seeing some inspo from others on here lately. Will see what growth I get over spring/summer. Just testing the waters

It took a while, but one of the Quandong seeds germinated. None of the others are doing anything...

The cedar seeds are going well. Logically - the seed roots that I tip pruned (as per shibui’s note) are slower to rise but seem to be coming now - they are in the front row. More lumps appearing in soil too so it seems a might get a few successes!


Later today I might put those left in the fridge (that hadn’t yet germinated) into soil... nothing to lose I suppose!

Do you think it is too late to plant some Japanese maple and birch seeds?

I've had a hard time sourcing bonsai soil in Melbourne due to the lockdown so I haven't planted them yet but maybe just some regular potting mix will do the job until I can source some.

Throw them in, the viability of maple reduces the older the seed is so you won’t gain anything by waiting. My trident seeds are only just coming up now so give it a go.
