Hi Matthew , I some cases posting involves more work than the actual task completed . Trying to balance work and play has a down side , even playing here can be bloody hard yakka .

A few injuries has slowed down progress but you cant keep a good man down and rest doesn't help the issues .

Cheers . Alpine

Hey Alpine, here's a view from above of one of the tridents I bought from you last year. Lovely flat root structure underneath, and interesting structure on top as well... hopefully I'll get it to power on a bit more this year.
Cheers

Hi Mel' , time for a root prune and a hard cut back , possibly even a reduction in height , gotta get mean with Tridents . They might be a bit slower up there but definitely cut it back hard then feed it really well .

Hi Bodhi , the avatar was downloaded from a friend , if only I could grow tree's like that , pure beauty . My wife loves it and has asked if i could create something like this :reading: , mate I'd try anything for the bride 8-)

, needed the tray for the other raft . I keeps back budding so I will keep reducing it over the growing season and you never know it may turn into something worthwhile one day .

Hi Mel , here you go , I hacked these 2 just for you . This is a trainer that was from the same batch as yours tall and lanky with an average narebri

P1130231.JPG
P1130232.JPG
P1130234.JPG
P1130236.JPG
P1130237.JPG
This one is the last of the flat cut collected tree's weighing in at 26kg
P1130256.JPG
P1130257.JPG
basically dropped into a tub and a sharp kitchen knife is used to remove the bulk of the root mass both on the sides and underneath
P1130258.JPG
P1130259.JPG
P1130261.JPG
a bit of a shake to remove the mix and trim back
P1130260.JPG
P1130262.JPG
the base showing the original flat cut
P1130266.JPG
I have chosen a front with numerous possible new leaders keeping the cuts/scars to the rear
P1130263.JPG
then off with its head
P1130264.JPG
I did remove another 20mm or so of the older roots before scoring the base and thick roots with a fork/ root rake
P1130265.JPG
Potted up deeper than before but now only weighing 6 kg with a new leader wired up
P1130265.JPG
P1130267.JPG
P1130268.JPG
P1130269.JPG
The apex removed was 300mm on this trunk however the new leader makes up 100mm . I have an optional leader directly below this , during the growing season it will be wired and trained to take over in case of a breakage to the existing one which quite often happens .

Well Alpine,

As per usual you look as busy as a one legged man at an ass kicking comp.

You are a bloody inspiration. There are some good looking trees coming out of there for the effort you've put in the past few years.

Thanks for all the pics Ian, really does show me how sad mine are! Reckon I only had half that root growth in a year, so will definitely up the feeding. I'd already root pruned the one I showed earlier, but clearly didn't take it back enough! I'll leave it recover rather than push my luck with that one, I think. I have buried it deeper to encourage more growth in those roots. There were another 5 seedling tridents that didn't escape a severe pruning today though. ;) Roots and trunks...

So now I'll wait and see if they recover in this unseasonal heat!

Thanks again

Hi Squizzy , mate I'm resting up , haven't starting digging up grow bed stock yet if it gets done all good or they will be root pruned in the ground and left there .

Some of this material is coming along nicely and a lots disappearing out the gate .

Hi Mel , thats the spirit rip into them throwing caution to the breeze , better to do it now rather than later .

Heat whats that , last week we had sleet and the occasional snow flurry and a severe wind storm that smashed its way through my stock . It took a day to clean up the mess with a wheelie bin full of smashed pots and to top it off its raining just to put a damper on things .

Cheers .Alpine

Hope you're on the way to recovery soon, Ian.

Heat is something we've had right through winter, keeping up with the root pruning has been chancy because it's so hard to know when to start when it's so damned hot here already! I've not got any new shoots on any of the tridents I've root-pruned in the last six weeks, so hope I haven't killed em all!

Fingers crossed here...

We're enjoying the cooler evenings here, but the days are getting up to the late 20's already!

yep got a -2 to -4 predicted this sat morning and top of 8 for Monday . Winter thankfully not over yet . I do not have one single bonsai budding or anything atm. last year this time everything was in leaf . Pulled 62 mm from the gauge for yestaday and 78mm early in august so the season is looking good so far :P :P

Sorry, forgot to say how sorry I am to read about the wind damage! That's one of my biggest fears here, because my stuff is all so precariously balanced on walls and stumps and things.. I guess there's a lot to be said for keeping everything in polystyrene boxes.

Matt, I have shoots on the tridents I haven't root-pruned, but none on any that have been done... a crepe myrtle I root-pruned about the same time has started to bud though, so I'm hoping it wont be long!
