Great work, Mr Grant!

Like a few others in this thread, I have been nonplussed by some of the incarnations of your Cedar, but I think it is starting to find its true form. I'm not generally a fan of crescent or 'scoop' pots, but this one works nicely with your tree, and your tree works nicely with the pot. I look forward to seeing how the relationship evolves.
Grant Bowie wrote:A few years ago before I moved to Canberra I sold off about 130 of my private bonsai (kept about 25) and had to make some tough decisions about what to keep. I only kept a tree if I thought I could improve it and was motivated to. This one fell into the I can do something with category but also the sentimental category as it is my oldest surviving bonsai I started myself.
While I have been doing this Bonsai thing for twenty-odd years less than you, I understand the "sentimental category" very well. 95% of my so-called collection is made up of trees that I've 'started' myself, and any woody plant that puts up with the kind of abuse I dish out is deserving of a category unto itself. I think the best thing about the 'sentimentals' is that they stay alive and healthy long enough to offer up new learning opportunities - just like your Cedar.

You have taken your 'sentimental' to the next level, or even the one above that.

I don't think I'm expressing myself clearly here, so let me just say that I think the Society should be revising their logo image soon. ;)

Goodonya!

Beautiful marriage between the pot and tree Grant. I am on the lookout for a good Himalayan Cedar.

Thanks everyone!

I am happy with this tree now and need to take it to the next level maintenance wise. Trimming, pinching, ferts etc over the next 34 years.

Thanks for the update Grant.

Do you find that this pot gets watered sufficiently when it rains? I am considering a similar pot for a water swept Melaleuca of mine.

Regards,
Steven

Hi Grant,

I really like this tree, it goes to show what age, technique and good care can result in. I hope you dont mind but i added a little foliage in Photoshop just out of interest to play with the negative space.
