The Ornäs birch - Betula pendula 'Dalecarlica'

Post by Per PF »

Found this really cool variety of birch in my neighbourhood. I've attained permission to take cuttings and will try until I succeed!

Here's the Wiki article about the variety:

Nice find, and good luck! Wiki says cuttings should work, so off to a good start.

Curious though, have you also checked near by roof gutters? Wonder if any offspring have sprung up nearby, which could help boost your collection?

We have this one here too, I just know it as cut leaf silver Birch. You should be able to get cuttings now in your area. Take softwood cuttings when shoots on the new growth are just beginning to harden, the shoots will easily snapped when bent that’s when you will know it’s the right time to root them. Generally your looking at late Spring/ early Summer, which is now for you.
Cheers

Thanks guys!
@Daniel: Unfortunately if it is a true "Dalecarlica" it only produces female cones and can't propagate by itself as I understand it. (I know it says differently on the wiki page)

@Kirky: Thanks for the advice on cuttings! They should have ripened by now, but haven't on this specimen. I've taken two anyways, no harm done.
There's a very similar birch here, maybe that's the one you have over there?

The true Ornäs is supposedly not able to reproduce by itself and has deeper serrations in its leaves.
They're both beautiful though
Here's two comparison pictures:
