I wouldn't be surprised if you are twisting the right kind of Mel ... I reckon given the location these may well be M. Rhaphiophylla or possibly M. Cuticularis ... or M. Stypheliodes, probably need some close ups of foliage and flowers/bark to narrow it down ...
In any case, whatever they are ...
