The track called Hounslow Heath starts around 30m past the bottom entry to the Nature walk, just near the Walheim Chalet.

Best part of the trek is the moss, fungus, and twisted and gnarly myrtle trees. I'm only sharing photos of the rain forest, having still not managed to reach the open heathland at the top.

Thanks for sharing. A very peaceful setting by the looks. I wish I could have done more walking in Tassie, but I was wearing motorbike boots to most places we stopped at.

Cheers @benbonsai and @Redsonic! Motorbike boots are probably not the best footwear for trekking at Cradle Mtn, I'll grant you that!

As for peaceful, yes it is, if you can find somewhere to stop, sit and contemplate without being attacked by thousands of leeches.... never the less, it is a wonderland to view, and while you're inside the forest you don't even know it's raining or sleeting outside... that's a huge plus!

Wonderful colour and contrast, beautifully photographed. Leeches, mud and slime: good to know from a distance. Nothofagus trunk worth gold.

Most of the tracks in Cradle Mtn Nat'l park have these, so we've learned to be prepared....lol. Before becoming yearly visitors to Tassie we were true Queenslanders, if it's raining, we'd just wait for it to stop before going outside.... after 5 years in a row to Cradle Mtn we now know that if we want to wait for it to stop raining, we'll never see anything... just don't ask me to wear the full waterproof gear in Qld!

Thanks @Kunzea, I doubt I'll manage to make the top until I get my knees replaced, but you never know.

Really love this walk! The bonus is staying at waldheim (forest home) which gives you the real experience. My fagus that I have in pots are just starting to change into their autumn glory. I hope to catch the last of the autumn change up at mt field later this week.

Nice! I will take some photos and post them on the forum if we haven't missed the colour change. My fagus are all growing well, however I am continually told they are not possible to grow long term as bonsai. I hope I can disprove this. My thoughts on this matter are that people may be pushing them to hard. Time will tell.

Tassie has to be one of my favorite places in the world, especially love cradle mountain. Been to tassie 4 times now and each time we have to spend at least a week in cradle mountain. Another place my family and i enjoy is the Leven canyon. Hope you have a splendid time in Tassie

Hi Peter, I have to agree that Tassie is a wonderland. We visit every year in late April, just to see the fagus. One week is spent checking out the tracks around the park, with everyone in our group getting together each night to talk about what we've seen, and what we plan to see...then each morning separate groups head off to the various walks they'd planned. I'm limited with my knees, but hubby enjoys the climbing and hiking, and there are plenty of people to share the lowlands with me, while the tougher ones go up high. Mark and Claire at the Discovery Park always look after us, and lead walks as well, as does @robsterios...their extensive knowledge of the area adds so much to our enjoyment of the park.

And of course....there are the trees!!!!!!

Love the photos. Fran and I had the joy of seeing some of this beauty when we had 6 weeks in Tasmania some years ago. We really enjoyed our holiday, it is a beautiful part of Australia.
