Tear it up

This tree is in need of some serious direction. Dug 3yrs ago, it hasnt had much done to it other than remove the huge chunk of dead root that it was attached to And kept trim. It was potted into this pot last spring. I have no idea what it is beyond being deciduous and the bark makes me think Prunus. The leaves have a soft downy layer on the backs of them.

Yes, the bark looks like plum of crabapple. Did it flower?

have you got any wire yet matt? this tree has some nice potential! i would wire it out and then place with a sense of organised chaos as a deciduous tree, a broom style would work well here, possibility for a twin trunk too!

No flowers as yet tho the timing of pruning may be a factor in that. The bark just doesnt seem right for a crab, well not any that i have seen/dealt with in the past.

Got some wire here but am in no rush to do anything with this one. It has confounded me for 3yrs now so whats another couple of months. Might take it to the club meeting this sat, Ray & Clinton are going to be there doing a demo, ask them what they think of possible styling for it.

I dont really know what I ever saw in this but just love it for how rough it is. Maybe one day it will go from the realm of potensai to bonsai, until then....

Was hoping for a few more ideas tho guess its hard to see from the shoddy pics. Am having problems with my camera, it only seems to get one good shot each time then has to be turned off for a bit before I can take another, doesnt seem to matter whether its natural light, flash, indoors or out. Guess its probably time to upgrade it, it is about 10yrs old now.

I think prunus as well. The dark colour of the bark is typical of plum, but without seeing it in flower/leaf its a little difficult to be sure.
Good potential though (but I'm a plum fan), give it a good feed, a bit of direction and it will reward you.

Tomorrow, next week/ month

The main thing about this that doesnt sit right with me is the backwards lean to the whole thing. I have been slowly bringing it up over the years, can bring it up more with the next repotting, once another biggish root is removed.

I have been looking at this thing for 3yrs now & still no closer to it. I will try & get some better pics tomorrow.. if my camera decides to work properly....

the backward lean looks like it is curving back anyways mate with time it will be corrected with a little guidance or you could spin it 180 degrees and it will be leaning forward

Prunus is a reasonable identification for this tree. But it could also be one of the Pear trees which also have dark bark like this one and some pears have leaves like the ones shown. For example P. calleryana.

Nice potential here.
