Rabbit manure mixed into soil as added fertiliser?

Post by Foddy101 »

Hi All

I have a rabbit who produces a lot of nice perfect pellets of poo which I read is quite a good fertilizer, and also does not need to be composted. I was thinking of just mixing a bunch into my soil mixture before repotting a few of my trees.

The question I have is that its mixed with some recycled paper pellets, which mostly disintegrate. Would these cause any issues in the soil? Maybe hold too much moisture? Would I be best to remove them if possible?

Thanks,

Your rabbit balls will also disintegrate to fine sludge. It depends what sort of potting mix you are starting with and how often you plan to repot. A very open inorganic mix may be able to cope with the extra fines and water holding. Finer, organic mix already has components that will break down to fines so adding more may cause problems.
The rabbit poo will probably decay and release all the nutrients reasonably quickly so you'll need to add supplementary fert anyway after a few months. Maybe a better use of the rabbit pellets would be added on top of the soil like many do with fertiliser cakes. Just add a few more every few weeks and they should release nutrients slowly each time you water.

Why not make a liquid fertilizer with it? Add 10 times the volume of water to manure, let ferment for a couple of months then dilute and use it.
