Re: Soil Mix
Oh Kate This will reopen that old can of worms again.
Everybody has a different mix and they will all tell you that theirs is the best and only one.
You could probably find this info with the search button as we've had a number of threads in the past but here goes
My mix is 70% mini pine bark, 30% propagating sand with a little zeolite and dolomite to balance pH as well as the required fertiliser. I use that with all the trees here.

Re: Soil Mix
Fortunately, I have bags and bags of Araucaria leaf mould soil from the East side of the mountains in Central Chile.
In an amazing stroke of good fortune, I purchased them on special at the same time that I was collecting Pallet loads of toilet paper. Fortunately, shredded toilet paper has the same properties as shredded sheet moss or indeed, compost - depending on when you decide the add the toilet paper to your mix.
Regardless - I am fine for Araucaria leaf mould and will part with some at the right price.

Re: Soil Mix
Hey Kate,
On a slightly more serious note ... next to my leaf mould response above.... I also have a cheap soil moisture meter on my shelf.
Why on earth am I telling you that? Well .... I reckon as we are starting out - any free-draining potting mix can work. Or any bags from your local bonsai club or bonsai nursery. If you're anything like me when I started out - you'll end up with multiple mixes and even if you have the one mix.... if it's free draining it can dry out quickly but then different trees grow at different rates ... add in wind, rain, sun... who knows when a plant needs a water or not!? These are a neat little insurance device as we learn to understand out own collection and how quickly they suck water from pots. Something as cheap as this can guide you http://www.google.com.au/shopping/produ ... lsrc:aw.ds
I am pretty sure some of the more experience folk here might scoff at my suggestion here but truthfully - I find it helpful and it might give you peace of mind as you trial different soil mixes.

Re: Soil Mix
if you want to try inorganic mixes. I can suppy 14 L bags of Kens Mix.
Not as many ingredients as Treeman's but I have been using it for long times now and much cheaper than his
Delivery to you there is $45 for 2 bags in a box + the mix so not that cheap but works fro me
otherwise grab some good quality bonsai mix from the local big store or any free draining mix available there.
