Fertilizing seeds/seedlings

If seeds are planted in a low nutrient mix, at what stage do you start to feed them? As soon as they pop? Or wait a little?
And what is best for them - liquid fert in a weak/regular dose? Or sprinkle on some slow release fert?

I would probably just have some slow release already in the mix if it's completely inorganic.

It's not completely inorganic - about 30% peat moss. Seeds are just emerging from the surface now.

Seeds all have a reserve of nutrient to get them through the first couple of weeks until they can get some leaves open but it helps to start feeding when the first leaves have opened up.
Most seed raising mix has very few nutrients because excess nutrients can feed fungi and other pathogens. You can get away with a lot when growing robust seed but the more delicate the species the more critical the right mix becomes.

Look out for damping off in really young emerging seedlings, especially if they are crowded and especially if they are sheltered. UV and fresh air are good antibiotics so sun and wind help deter fungi problems.
