A recent post from Matthew reminded me that it is time to check for buds moving.
I found a few trident maples showing red buds. I found some Chinese elms showing green buds so it is definitely time to start repotting.

I usually start with the smaller bonsai because they don't do well in summer if I miss repotting.
These were root pruned and repotted with fresh mix last week.

This afternoon I potted some of the developing trees into bonsai pots. Not sure about some of the pot combinations. I have limited pots to choose from so just picked something that fitted for size. Time in a pot, any pot, should slow growth a bit and help refine the ramification. It will also give me a chance to assess the trees and try to work out better shapes and colors.

wow that is such an amazing collection of miniatures. Do you follow the same treatment for developing these trees as you would for a larger bonsai?

Some nice minis there Neil, I noticed too that my Chinese Elm and trident forest are budding already, I was expecting a few more weeks of dormancy but away they go. Glad I got on top of my reporting over the last 2 weeks now.

Pretty much the same techniques but compressed. It is imperative that you maintain short internodes so some fast grow techniques don't suit smaller size bonsai.

Lots of bud movement now so repotting schedule has been brought forward. Fortunately I have a little more time at home at the moment and can get through more of these.
In between potting up trees for sale I get a few of mine done.
Here's another new addition to the Shibui shohin stable. Buxus harlandii

I also potted up a shimpaku cascade. Still needs some refining but that should be a little easier when it is in a bonsai pot. I've been thinking of making a shohin trident group for a couple of years but ave never got round to it. This year I decided to get on with it. I've been sending lots of these trident seedlings off to others for groups so just diverted a few onto my bench. I was thinking about how many years it would be before those trunks thicken up to look good when I realised I have hundreds of more advanced trident maples in pots. Why am I saving these for you horrible lot? Time to divert some better trunks to the Shibui Shohin stable. Managed to find enough that match reasonably enough to fit together as a group and came up with this.
