JBP Seedlings - when to start fertilising?

Post by The Surgeon »

Hi All

My first time raising JBP seedlings. Am moving from seed tray to pots this weekend, just wondering when I can commence fertilising. Seedlings are about 10cm tall.

Thanks

Liquid feed with a few pellets 4-6 weeks after repotting. Then feed as you would any of your other bonsai.

I usually start feeding my transplants a week or 2 after potting up. I also have controlled release fert in the mix so they actually start getting nutrients as soon as the pots are watered.
It may depend on whether there's any nutrients in the potting mix. 6 weeks is a long time for a tiny plant to go without any food so if you use a mix without added fertilizer I would start well before 6 weeks.
Fert does not seem to cause any harm to recently repotted trees.

Slow release fert takes at least 2 weeks to start releasing and then quite slowly so you can put them in at potting time. Liquids should be held off until new roots start. 2 weeks - 1 month depending on temps etc.

I think this could give you a bit of insight into your journey with black pine seedlings as well.
