Too late for this wisteria?

I inherited a pink flowering W.floribunda a few months ago and have been too busy to repot, on looking at it this morning I am wondering if it's too late.

It was in great health when I got it and is absolutely covered in buds but was last repotted about 6yrs ago.

I am planning to air layer most of the canopy back to inner branching if that might change the advice.

If it is pot bound, then make sure it does not dry out till you can repot.
Enjoy the flowers then repot like most flowering trees

Repot after flowering. The leaves will be starting to come out but there is no problem. Try not to remove too many roots. It's better to remove the soil, trim the roots lightly if needed and then curl them up and force them back into the container. Cramped roots = more flowers. Be sure to add the new mix slowly making sure you don't leave air pockets. Keep the pots on the small size unless you want rampant vines and few flowers.
Layering or grafting after repotting is unwise as there is a disruption to the efficiency of nutrient and water uptake (water pressure in the plant will be reduced) until established again. This will greatly lessen your chances of success. If you must layer, don't repot this spring but leave it until March.

Before my friend passed she had told me about pot sizing in relation to flowers/runners. She also mentioned repeated pruning of runners can encourage those shoots into flowering, is this correct?

Yes when you repeatedly prune the runners you force them to change their goal in life and they start to settle down
