15kg bag of scoria...

Post by Craig.a.c »

Went for a drive tonight to see if the big DIY garden/buidling supplier here had thrown any goodies out. Found a 15kg bag of scoria sitting next to the dumpster with a cut along the side of the bag. Looks like I wont be needing to buy some any time soon. I will have to go through it and break it up a bit though, looks to be as round as a 20c piece.

Nice find. It might be worth asking permission, if you haven't already. Even though it is next to / in the bin it is still not legal to take it. :D just be careful either way. :) :)

you will definately have to crush it up if you could get it to about 5mm would be a perfect size for a potting medium additive ;)

Ok ok, you caught me out with a little white lie. It wasn't next to the dumpster, it was in it with a heap of plastic, cardboard and a heap of broken tiles. I just said it was next to the dumpster because I didn't want people thinking I was a scab.

What is the best way to break up the scoria? Do I just put some in another bag and attack it with a hammer until I get the size I want?

Bretts is the expert at scoria breaking as I have had no success
Hit the odd lump with a hammer is too hard for me
