Fertiliser cups / baskets with stands and lids

Post by Jester »

Hi there crazy kids!! Some time ago I had written a post about fertiliser cups / baskets but I have since found much better ones at Kingston Wang's nursery up at Vineyard. The original style as you can see in the photo sat on the soil surface. Now, if you had moss on top of your soil like I did, the problem was, if you had fertiliser in the basket the moss underneath would not aerate and the moss would dissappear. The other style sits on a tall spike so this is not really a problem. They have a lid and each come with a fertiliser pellet, either native or exotic. If you like, you can also get refills unless ofcourse you want to fill it with your own stuff like say Ravioli or Baked Beans or something.

Thanks for sharing the idea Jester. Can't find them here in Brisbane but I found this link on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Bonsai-Plant-Slo ... 5638faf57b
is it the same thing? Is the cost reasonable?

If you get bored, here's my alternative.

Cut the neck off a bottle leaving two spikes. Pics explain better I guess. Make them as small as the neck allows. This is a reletivly big one. :) Those lil' baskets look cool though :D

Yes they are Kvan. I think the baskets that I bought were a dollar each. Mind you I did'nt have to be buy them in a pack. I could just buy them loose.

a cheap alternative to this is to get your missus's old stockings or pantyhose and cut them into sections, tie one end off, fill with fert tie that off and then place on the medium, if you dont want to have them on the medium put some tooth picks in it, and they will allow you to have them sit above the medium :D

These are some i got of Ebay from Thailand

At 32 cents each I thought they were a bargain. A little smaller than the standard Fert Baskets I have seen here but for the price I could not go past them.

Jester thats the ticket!!! Those baskests are great. I fill mine with better grow pellets. Dont ask how many i have. Andrew those are way to small for my liking although on second thoughts could be good for smaller trees and pots. In the peak of spring i have up to 10-12 around a tree. I also change the fert over every six weeks. :D ;) 8-)

I am sure Leigh has some, mind you that was 2008, when I was last there but he does mail order.

So if you want them give him a PM.

Cheers :) Pup
