Entry - Old Stock - JBP

Post by Webos »

This photo was taken a year ago...will post recent photos in the next 2 days. It is a Pinus Thunbergii which I purchased at a show about a year ago. I have done nothing at all to this tree since I purchased it apart from feed and water it.

Ok...took the photos the other day and have finally found time to get the pics re-sized.

The photos are of the Pine at present.

As mentioned in an earlier post, this pine was bought at a Bonsai show about a year ago.. After purchasing it, I put it into a Bonsai pot, it was attacked by possums that very night, the next day I put it into a polystyrene box.

I have done nothing to this tree since it was put into the box.

As you can see, it has a Shari right up the length of its trunk. I think the shari must have been done quite a while back because it has healed over and is very solid.

Looking at the tree, I think it needs a little more movement in the trunk, reduction of the needles, shaping of branches and their placement.

I think this will make a nice little tree in a year's time.

Last thing...should this tree belong in the Aged Stock Section rather than the new stock section?

As the tree shows signs of having been worked in the past, not necessarily by you Webos, it should be in the aged section.

Hi Guys, I havent posted since December...Pure and utter laziness on my part. This tree has had a little bit of a makeover which I started with wiring a little more movement in the trunk. I wanted the focus to be on the trunk as is usual with Literati Pines. On the same day I wired the trunk, I also chose some branches to keep. I wired these up also. Today I lookd at the tree and to my disgust, I saw that the wire had eaten into the main branch. I immediately took it off and started work on the tree. De-wired the entire tree, re-wired a couple of branches, cut the needles and took off a few branches here and there. Finally, potted it up into a small tray that I have had sitting around the house waiting for a tree to fit. i think it's a good fit but I'm a little worried that the tree might get blown over if a big wind comes through..I'll keep it sheltered for a few weeks I think.

Anyway, let me know what you think...look forward to your comments.

Not finished yet! Still have most of the year left to let it develop and then refine.. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm wondering how the rest of the competitors are going...cant wait to see their results

Most of the roots were long and thin spreading out to the edges of the foam box, wasnt choc-full of roots... Maybe I got a little excited, but i'm confident it will be ok.

Gday Stymie...I know... I think I assumed that the moderator was going to fix it up and switch it over to the correct category for me. If theres a moderator out there, do you think you could do that for me?

Thanks

11th hour restyle and I think I've made the right decision but I have 2 options for a front and I'm not sure which one I'll use in the final presentation. I suppose it'll come down to how well it photographs. Unfortunately it is in its pot and its not a perfectly circular pot so one of the fronts doesnt match up with the front of the pot.

I'll photograph tomorrow and post before midnight on the 31st.

Good luck to all who have or will be submitting

Re: Entry - Old Stock - JBP - (FINAL POST SUBMITTED)

A bit over a year later and here it is. I have been looking at this tree for the entire year and it was only in the past month or so that I started to see something in the lowest branch. Finally, 2 nights ago I worked up the courage to take the top off and there she was in all of her glory. A short wiring of the shoots into a nice little pad and that was it.

To me, it is one of those trees that keeps showing new things. As I spin the tree, I see many possible fronts. I suppose this comes from it having only one branch.

Anyway, its up to the judges from here.. Hopefully they will like what they see, but I love the tree and thats all that matters to me.
