My Gingko has only just started showing some green in it's buds (Melbourne) but my Zelkova (a new plant from bare root stock) hasnt even got remotely swollen buds yet - I can definitely say I scratched it 1-2 weeks ago as I was sure I had done the bare-root prune back well enough. I was told to prune it back hard as they can be very finnicky about not having enough root mass to support the top.shibui wrote: ↑September 13th, 2021, 6:46 pm Ginkgo and Zelkova are always the last to start in spring. There's always that nagging doubt because everything else is growing and then they start.
PS. Scratching the bark never helped get a tree to start growing. It only opens wounds that can possibly let infection in. Do not do it

Usually I can count on the ginkgo being the last to shoot, but this year it’s a race for last to bud between a young linden and my Japanese Beech. Everything else has at least green buds and the maples are fully out for weeks now. Funny how long some plants take compared to others!

I think my zelkova is dead every year at this time; recent repotting delays things particularly. It has consistently been my most resilient tree, though, despite years of early experimentation and bad decisions.
Buds have just started to swell, so hopefully yours is close too.

My zelcova are just opening now so my small linden definitely wins - no discernible movement yet.

In Western Australia my Ginko have finally popped this week and Zelkova buds have just started to turn green in the last day or so.

In Adelaide, ginkos are just unravelling their leaves, zelkova buds have started to green up and stretch out..... My copper beech is still yet to wake up, though. It's usually the latest to show life here in my garden

Re: Ginkgo Biloba hasn't woken up yet
I can confirm that my zelkova has finally awakened for the season within the last 2 weeks! Was definitely sketchy there for a time (and had to resist the urge to do several more scratch tests) where everything else was pushing out crazy growth (my acers have pushed out maybe 60cm of growth and one of my roses has already pushed out ~1.3m of growth!)
